Just spoke to Hagerty Insurance

It seems they WOULD consider my dad.. however he has to have a UK car here in his name with a policy running already..

Do I go and buy a cheap £500 car?? and dump it in our front garden and stick it in his name???

Declare it as a SORN so no road tax or MOT required?????

What is an EU driving licence and how does a UK citizen not have a UK driving licence?

He doesn't live in UK.. he is now a Spanish Resident.. so cannot live there and drive on UK licence.. He had to apply for an EU one... and they revoke/cancel your UK licence when it is issued!

Its da law

This is a tricky problem- as you highlight, your problem is two-fold.

I have been put on my parents' car insurance a couple of years ago- i am a UK citizen, Swiss resident with Swiss driving license (converted from my UK license when I relocated some years ago). It was difficult to ge tme on the insurance as a "dodgy foreigner", however, it was possible. We used Zurich insurance. I suspect this worked because we're talking about a Swiss company. BUT- the policy was more expensive than other quotes.

Could be worth contacting them, but I also suspect that the 1970s kit car would be a problem for such an insurer. I would have thought that a specialist kit car insurer would be your best bet, but it seems like you've hit a few brik walls there too.

Along the same theme, can you identify any Spanish companies that would do car insurance in Britain, e.g. Santander? Have you tried Day-insure yet? they do specific policies for non-resident UK citizens too.

Just tried Dayinsure and it works for me. I'm a UK Citizen, Non resident (for nearly 30 years) just found out:
1. I'm not entitled to a UK driving license any more .........even though I still hold one, and a local one over here (not EU)
2. Can't drive Mrs expatboy's car when I'm home in UK as I'm not insured due to 'non resident status'

Tried Dayinsure and put all my overseas details in and I can get insured in UK to drive the OH's motor for £131 for nine days.....Result

do you mean that your existing UK licence is invalid (which it is if you're non-res) or that if you returned to UK that DVLA have told you you wont be entitled to your UK licence back?? i suspect the first (which is correct) but wondered whether your 30 years away had done something else?

It seems I am finally getting a little closer!!!

TO ALL OF YOU OUT THERE IN THE SAME OR SIMILAR SITUATION!!! Save yourselves a lot of breath and stress and go to these people first!!!

1) A-Plan Newbury Branch. Lovely bloke took all my details this morning and is confident he CAN find me a solution. Just waiting for him to revert back now with costs etc.
2) Hagerty: Agreed to insure and cover my Dad but ONLY if he has ANOTHER car IN Uk in his name which is insured. My Plan B is to buy a cheap £500 runabout and 'park' it to gather dust on the driveway!!! Registered in his name. Not ideal!!!
3) Keith Michaels: Chap called Christian managed to find ONE company who WILL insure him. Premium was £625.00 (versus the £165 we are paying currently for just me and hubby with Performance Direct). Pricey yes. But the closest we have come to date!!!!
4) Waiting to hear back from RKH and a few others

I BLOODY KNEW THERE WOULD BE A WAY AROUND THIS!!!!

Thanks all!

PS: I 'suspect' that whilst our car is still on Irish number plates myself and Husband are not allowed to drive it in UK... is this right? I am about to get it MOTd and then send off forms to DVLA to re-register it and convert back to UK Plates (which it used to have prior to export to Ireland)... Good grief its a painful process!!!!

in many countries it's illegal for a resident to drive a foreign registered car without the (non resident) owner present, and police do take action if found. Switzerland and Portugal i know for sure.
The motive for enforcement is propping up a highly taxed local car market. For example, if you're a German driving a German registered car in Zurich and stopped, the police will ask "are you resident in CH?". Otherwise all Germans resident in CH would buy a cheap car from their own country and register it to a relative's address back home.
All that said, as long as you had the process underway and all paperwork to hand i dont think uk police would care too much.

Dear all

I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for all your advice... I FOUND SOMEONE!!!!!
YES THERE IS A GOD!!!

Special Thanks to "spaximus" for his recommendation.
I called A-Plan in Newbury and spoke with a chap called IAN. He pulled it off for me
For those interested...
Our previous policy was with Performance Direct and cost £170
The new policy with A-Plan is £375.00 for JUST myself and my husband.. and then to add Dad for a week here or a week there is £36.50 per week required.
I added legal cover at £29.00 too
So.. yes it is more expensive cover.. but the main thing is... It is done!!!!!!
THANK YOU!!!

I'm sure I will be back again for future advice!!!!

By the way.. A-Plan tend to have a bespoke service approach to specialist requests like this.. they TALK to the underwriters... so it isn't a case of 'you don't fit the box we are trying to put you in'
There isn't a 'computer says no' attitude!

So would highly recommend them if you have something a little specialist!!!!!
