Performance cars driven by non petrolheads?
Discussion
If anyone really wants to see this issue in the raw, try visiting jersey. lots of exotica being driven slowly, because A. There are not that many places on Jersey where a fast car can `really' be extended, even if there were no speed limits at all. and B. a lot of people on Jersey are the well off elderly, so the old problem of only being able to afford a really fast car, once a person is too old to really use it properly / enjoy it kicks in.
I asked an older bloke there who turned up in a new Ferrari, why he even bothered with it, given the restrictions placed on using it on the island, He said he liked to give people the opportunity to see a beautiful car, and speed was not what it was about???????

911 - Simple bragging rights 'I drive a Porsche 911' - One owner then told me he couldn't beleive that tyres were over £1,400 a set - I replied well what do you expect running over 300mm width and low profile - he answered 'What?'
M3 - Lady by me alwasy has the newest model (E46, then E92, then the E92 in that nice blue colour Monte .. something special edition) - Never seen her drive above 25mph.

I know a lot of people who drive 911s and (aside from one douche) each and every one of them is a bit of a petrolhead. I expect that Porsche probably has a bigger proportion of petrolhead followers than most (if not all) other mainstream "sports car" brands - more than Aston, Jag, Maserati, etc. (I leave TVR and Lotus out of this as they would have a much much higher proportion!)M3 - Lady by me alwasy has the newest model (E46, then E92, then the E92 in that nice blue colour Monte .. something special edition) - Never seen her drive above 25mph.
Completely off topic, but what did you think of the engine in the 330i? I'm thinking of getting a 3er estate from that period.
To all the people saying "its jealousy", "I don’t get this thread" and "i know a 50 year old man who drives an AMG"
Your all wrong!
Something like a range rover sport or an M3 doesn’t qualify for this thread, they are completely suitable cars for what you all call a "non petrol head"
We are talking about people who obviously, in error, purchased the "wrong" car.
There is a lady near me ive seen a few times, must be 65, dresses like a retired school teacher and only goes to Sainsbury’s and back (that ive seen of course)
The car? A brand new Focus RS in white.
I doubt she hangs around in McDonalds with all the other owners, nor do I think she has ever been over 50mph.
She probably went into the local ford dealership and just said "I want a top of the range focus please" and strictly speaking, the RS is the range topper.

Porsche 911's. Driven by fking stupid middle aged men &women who cant work out what lane to be in., usually a Carrera 4s auto.
Edited to add more detailWhy else would anyone buy a 4s over a 2s? And an auto for that matter. They are uglier, heavier, and do we buy a 911 for rwd or 4wd, which we hardly need in this country.

If the majority of the small minded people posting on this thread are "petrol heads" I am happy to consider myself not , Jesus the amount of driving gods here wearing shoes that are too tight is laughable
Stop fking worrying about what other people do with their own money and stop being so bitter

Or maybe she just liked the look of it and fancied something with a bit of poke?
And if that is the case then good on her, would prefer her to be driving something interesting than a 1.6!I can just imagine her popping into her local dealer saying the engine is making a funny "noise" or that the suspension must be broken as it is giving her a very bad back and playing havoc with her dentures

1: They can
2: Maybe people prefer the wide-body look of the 4S (I know I do)
3: 4WD is handy to a fair few people (eg. I live in the sticks. When it snows, none of the lanes are gritted and it's close to impossible to get out of the village unless you are on winters or have 4WD)

If I was going to edit it to correct the punctuation I would have said so, as it goes I didn't. As much as it hurts you, there are an awful lot of 911's 4s's driven by people who got sold the bullst because they had the money but have no clue about what they are buying and why, they wanted the badge and prestige.

Why is it bullst? If they like the car and it makes them feel good then what concern is it of your or anyone elses? As much as it hurts you I fear that you are just another jealous guy. Why did you buy an RX8, slower and thirstier than many of its peers and likely to go pop at any moment...oh, that's right, it was your choice, the same choice you scoff at when considering other people's cars. Crikey what would some people on here have thought of my mrs if they had seen her in her dax cobra the other day... driving way below the speed limit, couldnt keep a constant speed, wrong gear selection, going nowhere near full throttle.
She was actually on a data gathering mission with a newly fitted AFR gauge and logging system trying to dial in the cruise circuit on the carb, looking at vacuum and fuel mixture at various loads and revs to then decide if rods/jets needed changing or the idle mixture needed a tweak, then back to base to twiddle with the timing.
All that and she still managed to get my tea on the table spot on 5pm

Not jealous at all mate (why does every Porker owner think that?!) . I chose my car because it handles a lot better than any many other cars I have driven (including a 911 C2s, though I may have needed more time in it to fully compare) for the b-road driving that I do a lot of but less than 5k miles a year. When/if it goes pop I know I have driven that car hard and got the best out of it and not given a damn about the mpg. I knew all about the car before I bought it. Being unconcerned about mpg is not solely the domain of 911 owners, many enthusiasts drive cars with terrible mpgs, but why give a fk if you knew that?
You'd be surprised how many ppl can afford far more expensive cars but choose for whatever reason not to so I'd be a bit careful about the jealousy comment.
the most popular typical petrolhead cars i've noticed being driven by people i've met that aren't into cars are the Porsche Boxster or 911 or anything M/AMG/S/RS
i also once saw a woman that must have been in her 70's driving an immaculate R5GTT, i have no idea if she was a petrolhead or not but it was being driven very sedately and my only real thought was i wanted to buy it off her

So, TLDR: we've established that anything 'fast' or 'sporty' shouldn't be driven by people who either look old, are from the Middle East, don't drive balls to the wall everywhere, or have vaginas.
Fantastic.
Some of you need to take a long hard look at yourselves. I'm genuinely not sure if it's jealousy, prejudice, or something else that's fuelling these truly bizarre perceptions.
Every once in a while I'll take my reasonably powerful car to work. I don't stretch it's legs much because it's mostly boring dual carriageway or 30 limits, and it's terrible on fuel, so I'm quite often trundling in the inside lane at 60, with a massive smile on my face because I love how it looks, sounds, and generally makes me feel. I get home, sometimes having used about 10% max of it's power, lock it up in the garage, then leave it there, looking lovely. Then sometimes I do a trackday in it. Sometimes, somebody with ovaries drives it the same way.
That same person used to often sit on her journey to work at 60 in the bumper to bumper traffic in a DC2. She loved that car for the same reasons I loved mine. I'm sure lots of people thought it was 'her other half's car'. It wasn't. It was her that took it to Curborough/Anglesey/Combe, and the one with dangly genitalia that went along for the ride.
Get over yourselves, you elitist, judgmental, close minded buffoons.
