I have to say I agree with charltjr on this one.
Not all topics need to be worthy and serious. Nowt wrong with a bit of idol curiosity and the odd stereotype.

Small Vauxhall VXR models. I've seen a few around here driven by elderly women who have clearly gone into the showroom and asked for the 'top model' of the Astra or Corsa.

Obviously it's hard to define "petrolhead" but I'd say the vast majority of performance cars are driven by people with little technical interest in cars or driving. Amongest the mainstream brands, I doubt there's much difference in ratio of petrolheads to non-petrolheads.
I'm getting absolutely sick of this fashion of just making utter BS up on the spot. It's seems to be the latest fad or something.

I swear it was never this bad 5 years ago.

Passed what looked like a 70 year old chap in a Skyline doing about 50 on a dual carriageway last week. Yesterday, I saw a middle aged lady driving a cayman quite sedately.
Was it a white GTR? Was on a trackday at Silverstone and these was a pensioner there with his old wife with a white one. begged him to tke me out for a few laps as he was absolutely tanking round, making all the young lads in the GTR owners club look daft. He was great, car was about 750bhp and he does lots of track days and driving round europe with his wife just enjoying life.

This is another one of those rather odd threads.

Why does anyone care if someone wants to buy a performance car/bike and not drive it fast on the road?

They probably like the way it looks and the spec, for most people that's enough reason for anything to do with cars.

I say good on them - more people buying performance cars is a good thing. More supply for people like us who enjoy driving.

+1

I can only assume some of the more strange comments in this thread are driven by envy scratchchin

There's an elderly lady that often enters RWYB at Santa Pod in a stripped out Rover 75 V6 with nitrous....

The opposite of this is always great to see; everyday drivers who are just enjoying themselves, in particular I remember coming across a burgundy Astra estate overtaking someone else, and driving in an NSL at a good pace.

I regularly see big capacity German metal holding corsas, minis, etc.

Some of you may be witnessing a driver of someone else's car - husband/wife/son/daughter/dad/mum/etc, which I think is the scenario for the incredibly tiny Asian lady I've seen on more than one occasion, pootling around in a fully caged 996 GT3 RS.
Although she was wearing the harnesses once.... scratchchin

I remember a Honda dealer once telling me that the reason you see a lot of older people in things like Type R's is that often they literally go into the showroom and ask for the "top of the range" model which, with most marques, tends to be the fastest.
They might be onto something there....

You do notice a fair few older people with sporty hatchbacks that you'd expect to be in the market for something a lot less powerful.

It was indeed a white GTR; could be the same one.

Why does it matter if the person driving the car is a petrolhead or not? They bought the car because they could probably afford it and liked something about it.

So much jealously in the thread.

I'd go so far as to say most Arab "Princes" in the Middle East who have car collections or the odd supercar couldn't even tell you the engine size of their shiny trinket. They're seen as must have accessories for young rich people.

yes

That and M3's

I pulled in to shell for some fuel the other week in my 335i (mapped) and there were 3 M3's already in there, I was the only one filling up with V power. frown

I used to quite regularly see a tiny Asian lady (Chinese I think) at track days in a GT2.

Another lets 'bash the old' thread they are too senile to be Petrolheads. As far as I know its not a crime to drive slowly in a performance car but it is more sensible than driving like a nut which many younger people seem to think is being a Petrolhead. If im in the SLK to some a performance car I drive slowly I love the comfort & class & its what I enjoy about the car. I also own a 850bhp fire breathing monster to which I can add a 200 shot of Nitrous but don't try to prove how fast it is on the road. I know its fast & don't feel the need to prove it to younger Petrolheads in there cooking souped up boxes. Leave us alone we were making cars go fast before most of you were born. If you want to find out how fast my car is challenge me to a run at Vmax with a wager on the side if you like but don't expect me to race on the road I did that in the 1960's before the maximum speed limit.

You know what's worse than non petrol heads in fast cars, jealous morons who haven't got either the brains or attitude to make something of themselves and buy whatever they want...just because. Why anyone would care is beyond me.

That's only because their servants/nanny will do everything for them thus they have no interest in facts and the like. In my experience, most Arabs with something out of the ordinary are very into their cars. If you want a fashion accessory over there then you get a Land Cruiser, sports cars are for the truly committed. Dubai might be a bit of an exception having said the above though.

What a hero?! It's now what type or fuel you put in your car that makes you a petrol head?? Ha ha. Brilliant. Maybe something to do with M3's run rough on some higher octane fuel? Mine included! It it hates Nitro but runs fine on 95ron or Tesco momentum which is a higher octane oddly. Several car forums on the net with performance cars all reporting issues with Nitro, FYI.
