"...the inputting of names was atrocious".....

Ironically close to

"scappage" scheme smile Anyone can make mistakes. Was there an online system for the dealers to use? If so you'd think they could've had a go at validating the data...

Surely this list is riddled with bizarre errors - apparently 2 people used scrappage with BMW MINI Clubman's in 2009, a car that was at most 2 years old. Or a BMW X3 - of which none were more than 5 years old or worth less than 10 grand?
I think these are what the scrapped car was traded in against. There are allegedly BMW 1 series as well on the list, I doubt even an unrepaired category C or D write off of the oldest 1 series is worth much less than £2000.

(Its true. The Toad has no life.)

I had mainly Pugwash 106s and Rover 25/216s come across my desk during this period. I did send an immaculate Rover 100 Kensington with 44k on the clock to an early grave.

Don't forget by the way, that a lot of the details of these cars were probably entered onto the system by administration staff rather than the actual salesmen & they wouldn't have a clue how to spell some brands or what sub-models they might have been.

For the more fancy cars I wonder how many were actually in proper working condition, and not recently crashed or succumbed to a fatal breakdown.

Did the scrapped cars actually have to be independently verified? Could the dealer and punter be in cahoots and strip a rare car for spares first and just send the shell for scrap - therefore earning double-bubble for the car.
I scrapped a 306 and the car had to be MOT'd and I had to have owned it for 1 or 2 years (cant remember now) but the process was quite strict. I gave BMW all the docs (MOT / V5) for the Pug and they then came and took the car on a loader one day never to be seen again. I think there is a section on the V5 which you have to fill in to scrap a car which, if I remember right, they did when the deal went through ok; after which time the car was theirs to take.

I bought the car 3 years previously for just under a grand and took it to about 160K (with a very lax maintenance schedule) so to get 2k for it was a no brainer for me....some real classics on that list though...

Stop for a minute and think.

Do you actually believe that anyone traded in an XJC that was worth saving for £2k?
Same question about the 3.0 CSI?

Neither car would be owned and driven by anyone other than an enthusiast. People who aren't into cars simply don't drive stuff like that. An enthusiast would know what the car was worth.

Also, both are more than capable of being rusted beyond the point where repair is worth the time/effort not least the cost.
Probably an old duffer who had no idea of its value and just wanted an automatic Hyundai to nip to Sainsburys in. They are about, especially on the south coast.
You reckon do you? How many old duffers do you know that don't know the value of stuff? Old doesn't equal stupid. Pepple who don't know about cars don't drive expensive to run and maintain classics.

I'm sorry but if anyone thinks that an in anyway serviceable XJC or CSI were scrapped for 2k then they're the fools. There are far too many people getting worked up about a story with more holes in it than a colander.

Because there are a lot of lazy people out there, they probably saw it as a way to get 2k off a car thinking selling it is a hassle. These cars aren't the sort used as daily drivers.

the trouble with the scrappage, apart from the older cars being taken off the road, many dealers made a killing, cars that were discounted heavily now sold for full price! taking away the £2000 people thought their "scrap cars/classics" were earning them against a new Korean car.
now a few years on, those i30's and the like are't worth much now.

I towed my neighbours range rover P38 4.0 to the dealer for him - it only had a shell and wheels - non of which were the right ones - but it had an mot and v5 in his name for more than 12 months and thus it qualified.

Never mind the E36 3er with the Alpina wheels ("Do we spy an Alpina'd E36 3 Series there?"). What about the BMW 840 sitting above it on the scrapheap...?

My wife sent this car in scrap for Hyundai i20. why? the Madza 323F has broken rings (known issue on 1.5L engine) it cannot be repaired. It made so much smoke, the oil in sump was ran out when i arrived at dealership. and i had to keep the engine running near redline otherwise it would cut out frown

Glad i done it to this car, was sick of fixing it every week.

the trouble with the scrappage, apart from the older cars being taken off the road, many dealers made a killing, cars that were discounted heavily now sold for full price! taking away the £2000 people thought their "scrap cars/classics" were earning them against a new Korean car.
now a few years on, those i30's and the like are't worth much now.
Having worked through the scrappage era at a main dealer selling Vauxhall's I can vouch for us not making a "killing" as the £2000 was paid £1000 from the goverment and the other £1000 from the dealer margin -which on a lot if the models wasn't even enough to cover it! The best bit about the whole thing was the demolition derby's in the storage compound before the cars were collected, best stress reliever I can recommend...

And of course the government gained the VAT from every sale which was more than the £1k they contributed in the first place.

A lot of people seem to be overlooking that this was in 2009 too - before the recent upsurge in interest in contemporary classics. A lot of the cars on the list that people are morning genuinely weren't worth much in the market at the time, and anything with any kind of defect that put its repair cost within 2 grand of its value was a candidate.

And to put into further perspective - you can get hold of a Porsche 924 or 944 for less than 2 grand today according to autotrader (where over 40000 cars are currently available for less than 2k). Of course a few good cars slipped through, but plenty of them will have been worthless.

For me though the flaw in the system is that they should have had a mechanism by which the cars could be bought off of the scheme for restoration for £4k. That way there would have been a business for someone saving the worthy cars, all costs would have been more than covered, the new cars would still have been bought and there would have been more money made by the government out of the scheme. All ancient history now, but for the cars currently rotting on runways they surely should be able to get more proactive in turning them into a source of profitable spares...?

Now I'm depressed.

How many of those would have gone to a really good home (for scrappage + £££) if only the owners had taken a bit of time to advertise.

The reason the goverment didn't allow cars to be saved was one of the reasons for the scrappage scheme in the first place - To get the smelly polluting old cars off the road!
