Anyone know what actually happened to all these cars?

I remember there being pictures of airfields full of them. I guess they have all been crushed by now?
I wouldn't bet on it.

I think there's still loads on the hard standing at Bedford?

A few that made me cry

Various Minis
Ford Escort Mexico
Triumph TR8
Metro GTA
Lancia Delta Integrale 16v
Daimler Double 6
Jag XJS
Ford P100
Alfa 145 Cloverleaf

The Mexico would have been work £5000 even if it was just a pile of rust. The idea of a quick £2000 was a strong pull for some people.

It is turning my stomach and I have not even looked at the list yet.

Sadly, somewhere in the echelons of power someone actually thinks this was a result...

What's stopping someone opening a spares shop around the corner? I'm sure the government could get their cut.

Is this not just a list of every car scrapped in 2009, rather than every car scrapped via the scrappage sceme? It lists things like the Nissan Qashqai and Peugeot 407s. IIRC the car had to be over 10 years old at the time meaning the car must have been registered in 1999 or before.

Not every "classic" is a concours winner. There are a great many out there that are in effect rusty, tired, worthless moneypits. The fact that they have an MOT means very little.

That doesn't mean they aren't worth saving, but market forces being what they are, they aren't necessarily worth £2k either.

I'm sure there are lots of classics scrapped every year, before and after the scrappage scheme, its just we don't see them in list format.

In the case of the 928, I can understand. The cost of repairing an old blown-motor 928 with a ratty interior could well be more than the car will ever be worth.

For me the sad thing on the list is the number of Land Rover Series 2's, 3's, 90's, 110's, and defenders. Most Landy when they 'die' are broken for parts and the rust scrapped...

64 Corrado's total. Damnit.

Though I can't be completely absolved of responsibility. I turned in my Mercedes 200TE for scrappage as it had developed a majorly expensive problem with the hydraulic self levelling suspension system, amongst a number of other faults - and I didn't have the desire to get it fixed up, and my missus wanted a new car. Felt extremely bad leaving it to go to the crusher though as I loved that old thing.

Apparently S349KLW was the only A3 Hatchback 1.8T Sport 3dr to go in scrappage. Sad times.

Nah, they're not there in the numbers you'd expect in that case; I'd guess it's data entry errors - people typoing 407 instead of 406 and putting Qashqai in the box for the car being scrapped instead the car being bought.

Is there a Sport Quattro on there? eek
No, it says 1.8T Sport Quattro. It'll be an A3 or A4 and a data entry error.

It's sad to see the list but you could trade in a complete wreck so long as someone signed an mot certificate for you. Most of us know of or at least knew of a mate or local garage that would do that for you.

I scrapped an old punto that had just scraped through an MOT on the promise to the friendly tester that I was buying a new car on the scheme. Guess the punto was worth however much you could get for the bulbs and tyres. Got a Mazda 2 for £7300 and traded it in after 19 months for £6500 with a sizeable dent in the drivers door (not caused by me). Cheap motoring.

I took in a Porsche 924 and a Morris Minor during the scrappage days, both it in pretty poor condition.

As someone has already said, if the cars were woth more than £2K we just took them in as a normal part exchange.

Wonder if a certain Mr Harris would have parted with cash for a Pug 505 GTi Family? Rarer than hen's teeth or rocking horse manure!
