It's most annoying. The OH doesn't like Hello Kitty, consequently her car is absolutely full of Hello Kitty - including a Hello Kitty tax disc holder. That's one less item in there now. Damn!

My local Post Office yesterday put all their disc holders on sale - they are now only £1 (down from £1.50)laugh

I imagine if my grandparents were still alive I would be getting a new shiny tax disc holder for Christmas!

Is anyone else going leave the holder, and buy an age-appropriate replica disc?

Tthere's a thread on Rods n sods where we have pretty much agreed that the best use for the, now redundant, tax disc holder is to house an emergency Rich Tea biscuit...

When my car was featured in a Classic Cars group test a couple of years back, the photographer insisted that the tax discs were removed from the windscreens for artistic reasons. He'll be a happy man tomorrow.

Brilliant indeed. I have a heated windscreen on my SMAX. I wonder if I can fashion some kind of toasting device so I can enjoy a pop tart on the way to work?

Fair few people in classics forums doing this, 12 months from date of first registration

I'll probably leave mine in for a while on account of forgetting to sort it then just bin it.

I shall be bucking the trend and leaving my tax disc on display... it serves as a useful reminder to me of when the tax runs out and I actually don't agree with this complete change, I think it's a retrograde step and a huge mistake but I seem to be in the minority!

Fried egg would fit a tax disc holder nicely.

I've just bought a car which has 6 old tax discs in the holder, I'm quite tempted to display the one which expires in 2010.

You do realise there's no points for failing to display a tax disc? And even in the incredibly unlikely chance that he does get pulled up for it, I think you'd be extremely unlucky if you got more than a stern talking to.
Indeed, considering that it requires a form to be filled out by the police and posted off to the DVLA, who then send a letter reminding you to display your tax disc, I would suggest few people ever get more than a passing verbal remark about the disc.

There are now 11,000 less people advertising tax disc holders for sale on Ebay this morning compared to yesterday. We are down to 33,298 as I write. Now no need to bring this one up to date:-

I've had a Feb 1974 tax disc on my Beetle for a good few years now biggrin

I'm going to cut a bit of card and have the current tax disc stuck on then laminate it somehow and I will then have a coaster. The last ever tax disc I had etc. I will hand it down generations biggrin

I applied for a tax disc 2 weeks ago online and it came on normal A4 paper. I thought it was a fake at first as you actually had to cut around the disc as apposed to tearing it off but the letter goes on to say "that DVLA has run down its pre existing stocks to ensure that there was no wastage. To give value for money to the tax payer we have not replenished our stocks for this short period but decided to print these in house".

I got a metal Mountune one when the Fiesta got its MP215 kit fitted. Rather than have the magnetic fixing ring permanently glued to the window I just left the crappy vinyl dealer tax disc holder on & used the Mountune one as a coaster. Standard tea cup fits on it perfectly!
Tax disc is coming off tomorrow morning (expires today anyway & no replacement issued when I re-taxed earlier in the month)

Firstly, I've seen a lot of people saying they will keep their tax disc as a reminder. Is this necessary? We will all still receive reminders to pay our tax every year wont we? Or do some people just prefer to keep an eye on the expiration date?

Secondly, genuinely interested as to why you think this is a mistake. May I ask why? It seems to me this will reduce costs and make the system much more modern and efficient. I can't think of any practical advantages of being forced to stick a piece of paper in your windscreen.
