So what makes a three-door estate? No seats which don't have doors? If not then a lot of three door hatchbacks could be called estates as they have rear doors like an estate!

I quite like this definition of the modern shooting brake from Wiki actually: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shooting-brake

"three-door models combining features of a wagon and a coupé"

Now whether that is the same as a "three-door estate" I suppose is open to question

Other than the set of braces that made the front grill, I liked this - would have been better as the A3 though..

Hmmm... That C pillar design looks strangely familiar... scratchchin

Definitely more of a hatchback really, but a good looking car imo.

In late 1976 Vauxhall did a limited run of about 200 Magnum Estates called the Sportshatch. They used the headlamps and nose cone from the 'Droop snoot' Firenza along with the Avon alloys. They had a 2.3 litre OHC engine. Inside was bold plaid red tartan trim, leather rimmed steering wheel, and red carpets. They looked black but were actually a very dark shade of red called extra dark wine. I used to pass one every day when I did a paper round on my bike, and always though that they were a lovely looking car, quite unusual at the time.

I though these were cool too. Magnum was a macho name as the ice lolly of the same name did not exist at that time, from memory, so the nearest association was with Clint Eastwood!
I really like that. I had a Firenza and always wanted the Magnum. Someone I worked with had a Blackwatch.

My mother

Oops, I almost forgot about the AMC Pacer Estate/Station Wagon.

I had a music teacher back in the 1980s who drove one of these. Brown with fake wood.

Here are some other American three-door estates from the 1970s.....

Ford Pinto and Mercury Bobcat.

Chevrolet Vega/Monza.

Pontiac Astre/Sunbird.

Buick dealers also sold the Opel Kadett in estate form.

Why put vents on the rear quarter like that?

At least there's a purpose on these...

Even these managed without...
