Finally applied and accepted. After attempt eleventy million.
Have just attempted to use the site again, and surprise, surprise its down again. Message on the front page says it is unavailable due to unprecedented demand across their online services.
Oh well, try again later.

Woman at work had to tax her car today and only managed to get on by about 10 o'clock this morning. No luck after trying for 3 hours last night.
Noticed there was no option for monthly direct debit though (wasn't this a big new thing?).
It wouldn't work last night at all for me, but it did eventually work at 9am today.Noticed there was no option for monthly direct debit though (wasn't this a big new thing?).
I think the direct debit option starts on 1st November.
Excuse me for being thick. But surely the same number of people who tried to get their tax last night at the last minute is the same number of people that do this every month.
Or, is it those people that no longer applied by post who are now forced to get it online that pushed it over the edge. I simply dont understand the rush to get it last night.

I think it is a new site. The new one is on the "gov.com" site and is a different design to the old one. They have been running in parallel for the last month or so. Probably the first start of the month where everyone gets directed to the new one.Or, is it those people that no longer applied by post who are now forced to get it online that pushed it over the edge. Call me cynical, but down the road parked up was a VOSA car with an ANPR camera setup, now this in itself isn't unusual but normally they do it nearer the middle of the month.
Had to go through the ball ache of phoning to SORN one of my cars this morning after giving up trying to do it online last night.

Extra numbers I'm sure due to the tax offices in N.I. shutting up shop.Or, is it those people that no longer applied by post who are now forced to get it online that pushed it over the edge. I simply dont understand the rush to get it last night.
Did mine just over two weeks ago at the post office before going on holiday because I just knew this would fk up.
BBC News reporting that there are an extra 30,000 visitors to the site today compared to last year: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-29430979

I would have thought peak months for tax applications are March and Sept bearing in mind a registration date based system........Or, is it those people that no longer applied by post who are now forced to get it online that pushed it over the edge. So surprised by an October peak!

Its public sector they do 9:30-4pm ....
Except on Fridays when it's 2.30 pm.I think I'm missing something here.
1) There's no SORN option on the new system. They've taken the old system away.
2) Where is this monthly direct debit thing? I was actually going to make use of it in a 'pay as you go' fashion as I have a couple of cars that may well not see the public highway for periods of longer than a month.
