Using Gran Turismo to help decide on car!
Discussion
About 10 years ago I modified a white over black Toyota Corolla Levin AE86 on Gran Turismo. I had it turbo charged and used to try and drift it. It was wild and uncontrollable.
I now have a real AE86 that's turbo'd and wish I still had the game to mess about on. In real life it's wild but actually quite controllable. I haven't tried drifting it, not sure I will either. I know on a drift day (never been on one before) i'll go all billy big balls and stick it on it's roof. Unlike Gran Turismo a car wash won't fix it!

Not sure if I agree with you. Whilst working as a VW salesman, I also ran a VR6. The Mk5 Golf GTI has so much more torque, has traction control and a higher top speed (although to be fair, traction was never a massive issue with the VR6 and it was loads cooler). I think my mk5 GT TDI (140) was a match if not quicker than the VR6 in most everyday situations too (obviously the VR6 was quicker at the top end and if you really wrung its neck out).
I was purely talking 0-60 terms, unfortunately who ever I replied to really irked me with his over the top MK5 GTI fan boiness, for me the MK5 GTI really isn't very quick, it's in desperate need of a remap at least. To be fair I've not spent huge amounts of time in them but quite a bit in the Octavia VRS, and always found them wanting. Also the Corrado has a coolness that surpasses any rational decision making regarding other cars for me!!

I presumed this would be a thread about trying to choose between 36 different versions of the Nissan Skyline.
Weren't there more versions of the MX-5? Maybe the designers had spend along time on P/H? I think you can gain some very very basic stuff about a car when pushing on. While I'd never do the speeds I can in the game as soon as you stopped wafting my old S-Type and tried to push a tiny amount you felt the weight, same as the game. Agree you don't get the cosseting feel/noise etc
I always judge cars on how they make me feel and weather I'd get up early just to go for a blast. I've not had that for almost 5 yrs now due to going self employed, as I needed to be sensible. The wife drives the car during the week as I use my works car, so I wanted something to fit kids in the back but also to want to take it out on a weekend.
Out of those cars, limited I know, which one if any would come close to making me feel that way?

Sorry dear boy but a MK5 Golf GTI is not faster than a Corrado VR6, if memory serves it's about half a second slower to 60 than the Corrado. The VR6 is still quick by todays standards , I'd suggest if the M3 is out of reach then a good Corrado will give many a happy mile. I had mine while I worked at Mazda, and had RX8's, MX5's, Mazda 6 MPS and MPS 3's as company cars, apart from the Aero kitted MPS 3 I enjoyed the VR6 more. What was meant to be a weekend toy got used far more often than that.
I wouldn't know you had a pre defined disposition to a VR6 with a username such as that.I can see how you felt when working at Mazda - I'd prefer Hemorrhoids over a Mazda.

I am not trolling, honest
I did this last night after waiting 3 hours for the bloody thing to update. Wife was out so decided to have a rare night on the playstation when it occurred to me that 5 of the 6 cars I'm considering next month are in the game. Just wondering weather what I felt driving them back to back on the same track has even a tiny amount of relevance to the real world.
These were the cars:
Golf GTI mark V
Audi S3 02plate
Focus ST 05
Alfa GT 3.2v6 as I need rear seats.
BMW M3 E46 (if I manage to grow a pair regarding running costs)
The one that wasn't on there was the Corrado VR6, which is at the top of my list at the minute.
The BMW obviously was quickest by 5 seconds at 1.065 minutes and was the most lively and enjoyable to drive with turn in being far better than all of them, due to the RWD. But as for the other 4...
The Audi just under steered a lot, but seemed to have a better throttle response than the GTI or ST. It was also the slowest, but only by half a second, and gave out the most tire squeal.
The Focus sounded the best even by gran turismo's rubbish sound quality. Was quicker in a straight line and turn in was better than expected. There was nothing in it in terms of times between it and the GTI. For some reason it doesn't look agile but actually was.
The Golf was the best all rounder out of the FWD cars, it had the best turn in and was the one that I got the most consistent lap times out of. Was easier to drift as well.
The Alfa surprised me, as although it has the straight line speed I thought It would let itself down badly in the corners, which to some extent it did. But I got a faster lap out of it than both the ST and Focus, but the lap times were very inconsistent as when I pushed it, it just wanted to plough straight on. Patience was the key.
That concludes probably the most anal post I've ever written. If your bored enough at work and have driven any of these cars, Is there any relevance or not?
Oh, I've been thinking about a cheap GTi MKV, what were the interior plastics like on it? Better or worse than the Audi? I did this last night after waiting 3 hours for the bloody thing to update. Oh don't get me started on the audi's interior! Not what I was expecting from audi to say the least, very minimal without even any clocks, heater or radio....As for the golf, well that was great, very detailed and a much nicer place to be. Couldn't smell the leather though..

Picture each car and then imagine you walking away from each after you park it up.
Then... whichever has you snapping your neck round to have a cheeky last glance at and admire everytime, is the one to have.
For me... The Corrado, everytime.
(Says the man who wants a MK5 Golf GTi now, purely for family reasons)

Looking at that skyline reminded me of the Nissan 200sx, can't believe how much good one's are still going for. Can anyone tell me what the manual gearboxes are like on them? I still like the looks and of course the rwd.
Gearbox is ok, it's not the riflebolt action of a rwd Ford, but not bad. They feel very light, mine weigh 1250 kg on a weigh bridge, I didn't rate the brakes to highly, even though the fronts were 4 pots.
Handled very well, much better than the E36 and E46 that replaced it, drank fuel and tyres didn't last to long.
Would I have another, no way as mine was st, it was 2 years old when I bought it and when I sold it I hated it, very very unreliable, the gearbox was the only thing I didn't have trouble with.
Oh and LSD fitted as standard.

Are you mad?!!! If the front wheels hop up she'll end up doing 314786368 km/h...
