RE: Jaguar XE - the full range

Was the X Type really such a disaster? It couldn't quite compete with the BM3 3 series but it was still a decent enough car in it's own right.
It sold close to half a million units during it's 8 year production run, and actually received mostly positive reviews at launch and during it's first few years. This positivity has somehow been turned round into mostly scorn by the masses in the last few years. No idea why really, despite the fact that the X-Types I see around today (including mine!) seem to be in much better condition than their contemporary rivals such as the E46 3 series and W203 C class.Reminds me of American G.I.s returning home in 1975......
A picture or two for good measure;
I want the XE to do well, as it's British and good for jobs etc...But it looks staid, the interior looks boring adds nothing new to the sector and the engines seem to offer nothing new either (on paper) they haven't even launched a fast diesel (like or not they are popular)
Jag need to shift 90,000 units per year to break even on it (source Autocar quoting JLR) with the Germans giving away the 3/C/A4 on leases/pcp with 15-20% discounts the order of the day will they be able to compete?
I feel that JLR needed a killer product to be successful in this sector and that doesn't look like one. (I know I haven't driven it) Just my initial thoughts.

I agree - it is very mediocre in so many respects, particularly the all important aesthetics. A Jaguar should be distinctive, unique and classy. It should be an emotional product, something you desire for its uniqueness and class.Jag need to shift 90,000 units per year to break even on it (source Autocar quoting JLR) with the Germans giving away the 3/C/A4 on leases/pcp with 15-20% discounts the order of the day will they be able to compete?

This looks dated, generic and derivative. It's a serious disappointment after the F-Type. It's not a Jaguar for me, more a cynical spreadsheet exercise wrapped in a very conservative design.

The X type, for all its faults, was a least a distinctive car. You couldn't mistake it for anything else. The same can't be said of the new model.
What faults were those exactly? The implication is that it was a mechanically flawed car when it was nothing of the sort. Quite the opposite in fact. What it did suffer latterly was an image problem borne of ignorance. That is a flaw in the beholder, not the vehicle.

D
- Lack of interior space
- Poor trim quality in places
- Reliability issues with all wheel drive systems
- Poor specification on low end models
- Fussy styling
- Poor engine range
Not that it's a bad car, it isn't.

Well, some examples would be:What it did suffer latterly was an image problem borne of ignorance. That is a flaw in the beholder, not the vehicle.

Back to topic, I played with the configurator for a while this afternoon and specced up a Prestige with all my "options" and came to £48,500 for a 163 diesel. Then went and "built" a V6 S which already had the options apart from one or two for £49,000 with better wheels, interior etc. etc. 340 horses it is then

Does that mean I win I agree the Evoque is 'very' loosely based on a Ford platform since it's based on the Freelander 2 which was a Ford era product. But it's not a straight up exact Focus/Mondeo platform. So I do apologise for my pedantry but a continuation of myths & half truth's isn't helpful & unless you're a JLR chassis designer/engineer then it's just your opinion.
There's crateloads of unbuilt Spitfires buried under the Castle Brom works too :O

You must have driven one with broken suspension, the M Sport drives beautifully.
Not around South Yorkshire where the road surface resembles an asteroid it doesn't. It's quite appalling. Crashy, fidgety and you can hear the dampers and top mounts working hard. The car was a brand new 428i M Sport btw. If it were already broken.........

I love it when people post stuff like this^^^^ ;-)
yup, BMW, a company heading for the dole and apparently trading on past glories. Well, probably best we don't talk about this:
oh, and maybe this:
^^^^Which, no matter what us Car nuts think, ARE the future of motoring.
And what exactly has enabled BMW to be in such a leading position with Future tech? Yup, it's selling what is technically called "S**T loads" of boring but well engineered diesel passenger cars.
This is something JLR is well aware of, and hence the very reason the XE exists at all.
So, yes, you might not personally like the company, they might not be your favorite or whatever, but you'd have to be a fool to "write off" BMW with sweeping statements such as "they are past it"............

Where did I write "they are past it"............ ?
There is no doubt that BMW is a very successful and profitable company and looks aside, I like them. Hence my comment about them being very fine cars.
But, with them selling ever more cars in a never ending sales war with Audi and Mercedes-Benz, the exclusivity and the magic of owning a BMW will fade (the 2 Series Active Zafira doesn't help) and this is where a good looking alternative such as the XE will do well.
Which part of that is hard to fathom exactly?

Lovely looking car, I hope they take thousands of sales off BMW with the low co2 diesel. I expect they'll be making a 550hp version with the engine from the F type to rival the M5 too.
Would that be the XFR that rivals the M5 already? I'm sure they will produce an M3 rival at some point though. Gassing Station | General Gassing | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
