We could have benchmarked the XE against the BMW 3 Series, Audi A4 and Mercedes C Class, but there was no point, because it is obviously so much better. Instead we compared it against the XJ, XF and F Type and it holds its own with handling and ride comparable with both sports car and luxury saloon.

Yet you haven't seen the spec. This ain't a Porsche. You might find that you don't need to add options to it. It's not going to be the boggo spec with a V6 for £45k...

Have you seen the colour choices on the configurator? How depressing.

But the whole idea of climate control is that its set and forget so it should make no difference what the oustide temp is?

How many times have you ever wanted to do it from your phone anyway.

The lazy arse part of me would find that quite useful actually - if I'm leaving for a meeting early in the morning, I could know if I need to leave 5-10 minutes earlier to get fuel without walking out of the house to check.

And it just occurred while typing, if some numpty managed to lock their keys in the car, the app would save having to call out the AA or whoever.
Also means that on a cold day you can set your climate control from your bed to make sure it's warm when you get in.
& check how much petrol the other half has used, never have the doubt of whether you left the car unlocked & let the kids in the boot without having to give them the keys - assuming it works on 3 or 4 G & wifi and not just being another central locking remote.

But will this all be supported by the mobile companies in 3-4 years team when the lease companies defleet the early models?

I thought ZF's 8 speed auto was generally quicker and slightly more economical than the equivalent manual.

Seems not to be the case in this one.

Will it do that without the engine running though?
My Range Rover did, so as long as it's diesel then yes.

The basic diesel is £2780 more than the petrol and has 37bhp LESS. WTF

I can imagine the torque of the petrol and mpg is pretty close to the diesel, why pay nearly 3k more for it to sound like a tractor.

It looks dated already and that interior looks 5 years old before its launched.

Kia's have more design flair.

This is hardly surprising , diesels are so expensive these days to manufacture with all the required european EU6 legislation. The reason you would buy one would be if your a fleet buyer.

Interesting that none of the interior shots have the cow option. Anything to avoid the 'old man' image I guess.

The answer, every time, is "All of it"........ No woman in her right mind would fill up a car with fuel when she can juuuussst make it home with what's in there. Ideally the car should literally conk out as it rolls up the driveway, which means she has judged it perfectly!

Exterior styling is too 'safe'. Looks like every other Jag from the front. Thought it would weigh alot less too.

I think it looks great against the competition.

180PS Auto XE R-Sport in Italian Racing Red with 19" Twin Spoke wheels will be my new company car request in 6 months time. The spec has most things covered as standard (could do with directional lights, love the lighting system on my current C Class mind) and the BIK will be no more than I currently pay.

Was pretty interested in the coupe, but no manual petrol? No cheers.

Looks OK I suppose, probably have one over the equivalent 3-series, even if the rear light clusters look huge and a bit clumsy.

Yeah, but it doesn't know when you're going to use it, so a flick of a switch 5-10 minutes before you get in the car means it's ready to go, as stated.

I'm not disappointed by the looks or the general spec, but surprised they have pitched it higher than the BMW 320ED which is it's main rival. That might just kill it for me as I'm at the top end of my allowed range and if the residuals don't stack up as well as the BMW it won't get past the 'decision maker'.

Did expect the weight to be a bit lower but the 99 Co2 is excellent.

There was a time when the first real bit of journalism that I would read about a new car like this would be the road test against two or three of it's nearest rivals conducted in the UK with some real conclusions about how it fared against the competition in categories that a potential buyer would find informative.

Nowadays we get the slow reveal of arty photos, preliminary specifications, more specifications, passenger ride (I'm pretty sure Jaguar led the way on this), overseas launch (but we can't really judge on UK roads), first drive and then maybe, just maybe, a group test.

I've probably missed out a few stages in the current process but I am just finding the stuff that is written is not that interesting and is just designed to fill colummn inches or screenspace.

If I were in the market for this car, I'd want to know how the 320d equivalent or the top of the range v6 fares against the competition.

I'll get my pipe and slippers.....
