Paris 2014 - PH Liveblog

How to sass up the Opel press conference? With a supermodel, obviously

It's show time in Paris as the Mondial de l'Automobile opens its doors. Here you can read regularly updated blog updates from the show (and the build-up to it) with more up to the minute updates on Twitter from Dan (@Trent_Dan) and the main PH account (@PistonHeads), all gathered under the hashtag #PHParis2014. Friday, 1200h - show floor
As a cynical journalist I probably shouldn't admit this, but I love motor shows. I love the sense of occasion, the excitement when the sheet gets pulled off for a new model and the fact that big, boring car manufacturers spend money like Richard Pryor in Brewster's Millions trying to one-up each other for five minutes of glory.

And even now the combination of officially released internet images and the inevitable leaks have removed most of the surprises, I still love the chance to see something for the first time, from ridiculous concepts to the stuff that's going to become generic street furniture. And with a decent combination of mad and sensible, Paris 2014 is a bloody good show.

But the press day of every motor show comes with a mid-afternoon malaise. The moment when, like kids getting to the bottom of the present stack on Christmas day, you realise that the novelty has gone and you're just going through the motions. And it takes something really special to stand out.

So thank you, Opel, for the most brilliantly awful press conference I've seen in years. With debuts limited to a couple of Adam variants and the new fifth-generation Corsa (remember the Nova was a Corsa in Europe), GM Europe execs had obviously decided that Thursday's presentation needed some sex appeal. And so had recruited Opel brand ambassador Claudia Schiffer - yes, that one - to come and take part it a toe-curlingly cheesy scripted two-way in front of these new supermini heroes.

"So welcome to our fashion show!" said Opel CEO Karl-Thomas Neumann as Ms. Schiffer strolled onto the stage wearing the smile of a professional. It went downhill from there and after five minutes of this stilted conversation, even the Germans were laughing. At least Claudia's grin suggested she knew she was being adequately compensated for being there.

I can't remember anything about the Corsa, though.

Mike

599 is a nice looking car. Those uniformed chaps on the bikes aren't the police, their jackets read DOUANE meaning customs. What they are doing is looking out for cars not registered in France which are driven/ owned by French residents, IE driving a car where French taxes have not been paid. I had an experience with these guys last year. Went past two (as I thought) police bikes at just slightly over the speed limit, thinking, great, they won't be after me. A mile or two later we were pulled in by one of them. He was extremely polite, kept us there at most two minutes while he had a quick look at the paperwork and location of driving licence, then stopped traffic to allow us to rejoin the dual carriageway easily.

"Sad really but a reflection of the times we live in. I know, I know, I shouldn't advocate speeding and all that. But when a gentleman in a Lamborghini meets a gentleman in a Ferrari on the road to Paris and both are so cowed by paranoia there's not even a cheeky little squirt up the road there's something badly wrong with the world. I can't help but think a couple of decades ago it'd have been loafers to the carpet and last one to lunch pays the bill. Ho hum."

Amen to that!!

Oh the speed cops were there too and mid collar when I arrived. A boot cooling reminder!

Jeez, Dan, that's a brutal assignment. It could only have been worse if you were chauffeuring Taylor Swift. My commiserations.

Oh, how the other half live!

I'm covering the show for the company I work for. Whilst the journey was relatively serene on the train this afternoon, driving through central Paris in rush hour was anything but. To top it off, my hotel is extremely shabby but by no means chic. Thought I'd got ripped off buying a skinny cappuccino at St Pancras earlier, but that was nothing in comparison to the sthole we're in now.

Wish I'd booked it a year ago now. Damn you, Paris Fashion Week. Grrr. Still, it's all about the cars for the next two days so that's getting me through it. smile

My mate works for the company that designed the software for the Audi TT/Huracan.

His workload has tripled.

There is some more exciting stuff to come. Sadly can't say more than that.
