No, it's a ridiculous idea and would cost more to administer than it would raise, as everyone who could, would only tax their car on the days they use them.
Please note I am not defending VED - god forbid - just pointing out the cost of admin versus the (reduced) income.

Why should it cost a fortune to administer? Its all being done now, its only a matter of the dates that are in question.

You should be able to send the V5 back in with a point of sale/transfer date on it & a computer will automatically charge the buyer with road tax from the sale date & credit the seller with same.

As has been rightly pointed out (everywhere) the Govt. is behaving like Dick bloody Turpin over this & basically just helping themselves to an additional months road tax every time a vehicle is sold.

As much as its daylight robbery its also a matter of the general attitude it creates towards government and taxation. If its OK for Government to just rip people off like this then the reverse attitude is that all's fair in love & war & its fine to dodge a bit of tax or VAT where you can. Its a very stupid measure indeed. Whichever pen pushing beaurocrat came up with it probably thought he was being a genius. Its not what most members of the public would describe him/her as though I think.
