Just had my insurance renewal go up again....

reason - reporting to the insurance company 2 years ago that my car had been damaged by a third party. A van clipped the front wing of my car whilst my car was parked. Van driver was traced but refused to admit responsibility and there was no other witness.

I made no claim
I personaly had no accident
I was not in the car at the time
The 'incident' cost no one any money (apart from me as the car is devalued)
My car still has the scratched/dented front wing
I obeyed the 'law' which states I must notify my insurers

And yet this costs me over a hundred £'s every renewal for 5 years.

Punishing the honest is not the way to discourage insurance fraud.

thats why people don't bother to call the insurance company and tell them.

Change insurers then.

I had a bump from behind last year, driver drove off and refused to acknowledge incident. I declared it as you're meant to. This year's premium was competitive, after some ringing around it had come down by £100.

Regardless of the claim/cost/fault etc., all they see now is someone who was involved in an accident. Using their 'justifications' for premiums, you're now a higher risk, in the same way your neighbour's car getting stolen will also put your premium up as the postcode is now a higher risk.

It's a stter, but that's their game - I wouldn't have declared personally, but that's the benefit of hindsight.

Change companies.

I had a similar non-fault accident - my car was parked and was scraped by third party as they parked. Cost of claim about £2k, my insurer didn't charge me excess, prejudice NCB and had no influence on renewal premium.

Just moved at renewal and the non-fault claim made no difference to the premium.

Try a better company.

They aren't giving you a competitive quote by the sounds of it. Shop around.

I've had a similar issue.

In traffic, car behind me was hit, that inturn nudged it into me.

No obvious damage to my car, towbar helped there, but still took details etc.

Didn't report to my insurance as no need.

Next renewal I was told there was a record of an accident on file, I knew nothing about it!

If I had of known it would be recorded I would have gone to the far end of a fart over any little damage!

I imagine that the punishment for insurance fraud is a hell of a lot worse than increased premiums for a few years.

OP, are you more or less of a risk than someone who doesn't park where a van might clip their wing? Based on that should you pay a higher or lower premium?

Well framed question to get the answer you want, but very simply and comprehensively defeated by further, friendlier questioning.

Simon.

Well I've tried getting other quotes, but the 'incident' comes upon the insurers system as its recorded in the database that they share.

So it's affecting all my quotes. I'm paying for some one else's bad driving, and it's not as of I've incurred any costs to any insurance company.

Premiums have been going down for the past 12 months at least overall. Even without the incident, your premium would have gone up, even by a lesser extent.

The only way to stay on top of the market is to switch every year. Use Confused, it's a decent benchmark.

Bit daft reporting every little thing to them. As you have seen its of no benefit to you to do so.
