Mega miles in a petrol = hours wasted queing up to fill up. As I don't want to be in first name terms with my local Esso I'll stick to diesel thanks ( 60 mpg & no mythical diesel breakdowns in 6+ years)
Depends whether you live in some overcrowded infestation or not. I can't remember the last time I queued to fill up. In and out inside 5 mins even without using pay at pump.

100% agree. For most it`s about MPG and cheap tax.

Major dilemmas here chaps. Not sure I agree with many of the posts (maybe I need to resign from PH? biggrin ).

We have two cars at the moment: an M135i and a 635D. I tend to prefer driving 'my' 635d than the M135i - the 1er is the 'wife's' car (ho ho). They have very similar power delivery in that as anyone who's driven a x35d car knows, there's an uncannily linear and seamless wall of thrust from 1.5k rpm to the redline with no peakiness at all - just like the M135i. Sure the M135i sounds better, but as we all know the sound is piped through the hi fi. Two very different cars and driving experiences, BUT the power delivery is remarkably similar. Throttle response in the 635d is better too. (both are autos). BUT I can easily do 580 miles per tank in the 6 and average 37 mpg, whereas I'm getting 330ish miles out of the M135i and about 25 mpg.

I'll get me coat. And close the door after I leave smile

For me the extra couple of hundred quid a month in fuel is a price worth paying for cars with engines that I enjoy. I spend 2 hours a day in my car, on a mix of a and b-roads (with a bit of city driving thrown in). I may as well enjoy those 2 hours as much as possible and I find a petrol engine much more enjoyable than any diesel. I've owned plenty, including some modern diesels but they just lack character in my opinion.

If I did 40 or 50k miles per year I might change my mind!

Good Lord, I can't believe anyone has stated the bleeding obvious yet?

Thus: I accepted a new job that involved a 200-mile round trip 4 days a week, 6 or 7 years ago. Fuel economy was then obviously going to be a factor.

Did I rush out and buy a Diesel?

Hell no! You've gotta be kidding....

I just had my petrol car converted to run LPG. Instant win. The cost of conversion was £1500, and after the four years of doing that job / commute, I worked out my savings of petrol v LPG. Saving on fuel costs was £8,000, minus the £1,500 cost of conversion = £6,500 saved.

Job done. And then we had a Merc 500SL V8 for our weekend car as well!

40 odd to the gallon having fun in the Elise. 16 to the gallon back and for to work, 4.2L XF. Ooops, I think I've got that the wrong way around.

The up side is that I use a van for the commute and the Jag does 28 to the gallon with the cruise set to 90 MPH.

In the 80s, 90s and early 00s busy sales execs and company chaps were more than happy with 34mpg... cruising about at 75 to 85 think BMW 523i or BMW 528i, A6 petrol etc I think my dad even ran an e46 m3 over 3 years and 100k miles and averaged 32 mpg... the lease company / fleet manager was more bothered about cost of tyres than fuel cost.

Yet now we have these headline diesel mpg figures, which in the real world for many cars are non sense unless you drive at 60 with air con off.
Because the difference in money saved in fuel was far smaller than today. 25-30mpg from that vs the most economical diesel of the time at petrol being around 70p/litre at 20k/miles per year is a much smaller saving that today with 25-30mpg vs 60+mpg at £1.27+/litre.

I'm not doing mega miles, about 13k this last year but it's all been done in a rather thirsty 4.4litre V8 petrol at least.

Haha! You're a bad man, but correct. biggrin

Listen, the thing is, I've been lucky (or unlucky) enough to own 3 supercharged 4.2 V8 Jags (S Type R, XF SV8, 07 plate XKR) in the last 7 years and to be brutally honest, apart from the sound (lack of SC whine and V8 rumble) there's no real discernible difference between booting it in the 635d. Same sensation, same sort of thrust, same comfort, probably similar in gear times. Only difference is 19-22 ish mpg for the Jags, and 37 for the near silent 635d. Which in the real world translates to 290 miles per tank as opposed to nearly 600. Don't get me wrong, I love Jags and would have an F type if I could afford to buy it. And anyone who knows me will know that any consideration of eco bks is last on any list that I would ever adumbrate if I were forced at gunpoint.

Thing is guys that once forced induction comes into play then the differences in engine characteristics and power delivery are considerably narrowed (ok less so turbo vs S/C). But, my previous Z4 MC vs the M135i is an interesting case study. M135i with auto would murder the Z4MC everywhere in the real world apart from in extremis on a track, but even then I do think with my very limited talent I could pedal the M135i a lot faster than the Z4MC. Fun factor? Dunno really.

What does all this mean? Not sure, but what I would say is if anyone doubts what a diesel can do, then they should drive a x3d or x40d and have an open mind.

On the plus side, you only spend 8k miles per year driving a diesel than any more. On the negative side..... Hand your PH membership in will you! 8k per year and you chose a 320d? hehe

I tend to drive 2 cars at the moment, my MG ZT with a 2.5 petrol V6, and a Focus 1.6 TDCI. I actually quite enjoy driving the Focus (mum's car, I use it once or twice a week; it's a very pleasant motorway cruiser) and it also makes my MG feel a lot quicker when I get back in it. However, whilst it's a competent and pleasant car, the thought of the diesel Focus as my only car really depresses me.

Pity you care too much about what others think and had to get something newer but inferior in every way bar fuel economy wink

Or.... Unlucky for living in an estate where a 320d looks the part but a 7 series doesn't hehe

Currently doing 20k p.a in a 130i. Its killing me tbh, but those st days at work, being able to open the taps on the way home and hear that noise makes it all better!

Tbh been thinking of lpging it to get 60mpg equivalent. Best of both worlds.
