As I'm on the hunt for an Impreza at the moment, and there's no doubt a few in this thread. Is it possible to get a mountain bike in the back of a saloon or is a wagon the way to go. I do prefer a saloon purely because I want an STI, so yes is the correct answer here
Or the roof.... sure you can get bars on an STI DanielSan said:

Great cars though. The wagons are hard to beat for value for money, practicality and performance. Probably the fastest way of getting around in the winter months. Had some great fun in mine in the snow and ice. Addictive soundtrack too, makes up for the sound system.

Chris,
Fancy a Range Rover?
Reading all the comments is making me want to have it back.
I'm sure we can come to some arrangement
I'd love to mate but I've fallen head over heels for it! Have Cotcomp not go another one you could procure? Fancy a Range Rover?

The saloon doesn't have rails, I have a Thule roof bar kit (purchased cheaply on eBay) and it is pretty solid. For heavy bikes and/or somebody worried about maintaining pristine paintwork I'd recommend a tow bar mount though.
Not really on-topic, since mine's a classic, rather than blob-eye, but I just wanted to use the excuse of 'Imprezas with bikes on the roof' to post this pic of my wagon from a couple of months ago on a recent trip from Cambridge to North-West Wales. 265 miles each way, with 4 Adults, 2 bikes and a packed boot full of luggage and she didn't miss a beat. She even managed to complete each leg of the journey without needing to stop for a re-fuel, with the needle still above the 'E' mark.
I have 55 plate 2.0 PPP Wagon in Rally Blue with STI scoop & front spoiler (fitted by previous owner). Great fun when it does come out of the garage (3rd car) & most of the summer spent with the windows down listening to the soundtrack. Standard brakes don't inspire any confidence - until end July daily driver was Golf GTD DSG which had superb brakes - even after calliper rebuild & new discs. 25mpg max but >30mpg has been seen on longer journeys. A very fast & capable companion for not a lot of cash. Golf R Mk6 & equivalent S3 similar performance & capability for £12/£15k more.
I had a WRX Bugeye for 7 years, STi intercooler & scoop, 2.5" full exhaust and mapped to 278BHP, bought it brand new in 2002, sold it with 92k miles in 2010.
I used it as an every day car for a few years and then started to track it, only real problem I had was breaking the standard 5-speed gearbox so I fitted a P! box and diffs (50/50 distribution and an LSD).
Absolutely loved the car, fitted quite a few handling mods along with the STi Brembo calipers front and rear, it was a car that could do everything really well, a fantastic all rounder.
Only sold it to buy an STi Spec-C which is basically an STi on steriods!
PS - Thule definately sell a roofrack for non-roof bars, mine is still hanging up in the garage....

Great car OP. I wanted a blob eye when looking for mine but the budget wouldn't quite stretch. Bought my bugeye for £1900 a couple of years back and 25k miles later (on 117k now) she's never skipped a beat. London and back from the south coast yesterday in torrential rain at times- never lost grip once . Also been awesome in the snow when everyone else is slip-sliding everywhere. Only issue is that when you come to think of getting something else that ticks most of the same boxes you don't have much of a list! Must be a connection between these cars and bikes too...
I had an estate wrx. Fantastic utterly reliable
Had to be estate to specific get my bikes in.
However I did eventually sell as just too small once I had kids and all the crap they come with.
Ruinous in the fuel dept though. Unstoppable in winter and snow
I really really really miss it.

Great thread, love mine. Bought it as a cheap stop gap after getting rid of the 535d.
It's now got under my skin and is staying. It's my 3rd Impreza and my second Wagon. What a great overall car.
I've just added a Perrin short ram intake and I've got an STi decat up pipe ready to go on.
New shocks, new thicker anti roll bars and drop links and bigger wheels are all on the list.
I have some Brembos ready for the front, but need to secure a set for the rear.

I was looking at 05 onwards plate STi's last night. Amazingly they're cheaper to insure than my Civic Type R.
Now the question is... an STi or a 350Z? Hmm...
Sorry...you mention a 350Z and an STi in the same sentence?!.....I envy how much you have still yet to experience, sir!Now the question is... an STi or a 350Z? Hmm...
There is only one winner there!

The SL's are holding their value well.....once you start looking at cars beyond '03, the prices rise quite dramatically.
It's true, you can mod the car and map it easily past the PPP, I just went for it as it felt like a purer connection to the Impreza heritage i.e. Prodrive.
I've only been out in a classic.....felt that little bit more raw, but if you want the SL spec then the original is not the one to go for. Main thing to look out for on the classics is tinworm!
If you have a PPP, is it just a case of fitting a standard ECU, to then allow the car to be live mapped? It's true, you can mod the car and map it easily past the PPP, I just went for it as it felt like a purer connection to the Impreza heritage i.e. Prodrive.

You'll be needing something other than standard WRX wheels to clear Brembos. They're very wide.https://www.dropbox.com/s/iysgla0u4umjp6h/20140505...

The earlier ones use a daughterboard but I think it's easy enough to remove.
I don't know if there are any live mapping methods out there - you can live monitor and log but adjustments are made by reflash.
