Oh snap! Mine's a 520i too and even has the whiney gearbox. I'm actually toying with selling it at the moment. Not sure what image it gives off and quite frankly I don't care.

Other car is an MX5 - I don't care what people say about that either.

For reference - I'm 26, have floppy hair and glasses and work as a paralegal. Most of the people I work with have Audi A3 S-Lines and the like.
Much rather waft along in an E34 than a modern A3! Even if the 520 is a bit slow... How Whitney is your gearbox on a scale of mildly irritated toddler to fully stuck pig?
I would describe it as "quite whiney" - it's not horrific, sounds like a small supercharger when you're accelerating. All seems to function as it should.

Anyway, it's in the classifieds now. It hardly gets used any more and my MX5 needs me.

It's a 15 year old Boxster on a private plate (it came with the car).

You and I know it cost less than £5k, and is therefore a fun alternative to the regular hatchbacks as my first car.

Joe Public probably isn't so kind.

Still, I like it and that's why I bought it.

I hope people think:

“That’s an old car, I haven’t seen one of them for ages; they must be really poor and can’t afford anything better, I am not bothering with them as I am significantly richer as I drive a new car, they couldn't even afford a new Golf, mine was only £X a month...”
Update:

What the family say (a few times a month, like last night):
“Perhaps you should get a car that’s more fun”

What the Family implied:
“That shed was intended to tide you over until you found something you liked, you weren't supposed to service it properly and fix all the problems, you haven’t been to see any cars in over two months now; why doesn't he just buy the Cayman R he was going on about ages ago”

A silver Saab 9-5 - Old man's car if people know what it is. Otherwise quite neutral. I've only seen two others in 16 months with the same front bumper style so it's not exactly well known I think smile Also, not many really know what "Aero" means....

9yr old BMW 530d in grey - probably think either nice car, or can't afford a new one?

One thing I notice is that when it's got all the family in, keep getting angry dads trying to drive up my arse in their shiny Picasso / Zafira / quasqai's. Guess they have to prove their car is better and faster than mine.
Good luck.

Hard to say..

Citroen C6
MX5 Mk 2.5 with supercharger

I'd like to think it suggests an individuality, but an MX5 isn't that unusual a car, even if it has been modified.

Cars of that vintage have been through the banger part of their lives and for banger money there are more modern alternatives and so are likely to be in the hands of an enthusiast.
