What's your point? Touareg W12 petrol would be a better comparison to the cayenne GTS petrol don't you think?

To my eyes the Toerag is a much more handsome more balanced looking design ..... and as for the Cayenne looking "uber cool" .... I don't think "cool" and "Cayenne" can ever be included in the same sentence.

They may share the same bit of tin plate the expensive bits are bolted onto but thats about all. Don't kid yourself that the VW rides or drives or handles and corners anything like the real thing.

A 1.2Tdi Polo for work allows this to pull the caravan quickly at the weekends.. despite what any nay sayers might also say it is just as capable off road as any Landrover product of the same class, Less articulation granted but the drive train will climb over everything with its sophisticated control, low range, and 3 locking diffs.. Its only off road limitation is how much you want to dent your panels!! I bought it to pull 3 ton trailers, take my wife to work quickly and in luxury and it can also climb my hillside at 440m above sea level and get us out in the winter. I don't know which entry level poverty spec model they took the prices from. Mine was nearly £100k in 2008 which made what I paid for it feel very inexpensive despite being the most expensive thing I have ever bought.

as long as you don't forget that it is still a £100k car to maintain you won't feel anything other than happy when you drive one.

Oh and its Thirsty…But it is a lovely place to be.

I had a R50 V10 Toerag and it was without doubt the most grin inducing car ever. It's the torque, bucket loads of creamy smooth torque, It made me laugh ever single time I decked it. Just the best feeling for a daily driver. I ran that car for 4 years of pure pleasure and would still have it but for an errant Skoda Fabia which ploughed head on into the missus in the snow and destroyed itself. Toerag still driveable but cost of repairs wrote it off. Handling very dodgy, brakes marginal despite the size, electrics had a mind of their own, totally useless off road stuck in a wet field very embarrassing! But sheer unmitigated LOL fun every time you deck the throttle. RIP 313HMN still love you.

I spent a long time looking at both before taking the plunge..R50 would be a fantastic tow barge..Spoke to a couple of specialists who said that it could be a lot more expensive than the GTS in V10 form because of the need to drop the engine for almost everything…I would think it should be pretty bomb proof though..

I think the downfall of these cars is ultimately when poverty stricken folk like me buy them to run on a shoestring biggrin

This "comparison" seems bogus.

The VW is compared in the text to a Gen 1 Cayenne GTS, yet the pictures are of a gen 2 GTS - which is a considerably more expensive and modern car.

Not comparing like with like.

My brother had one of these, he also got stuck in a wet field, cue much laughter from locals who drove round him in their normal road cars. Still, very nice motor and better looking than the Porsche which, from a distance, just looks like a massive Audi A3 with a chavvy bodykit on it.

I can't help wondering whether they'd have sold a lot more Cayennes if they'd put a bit more effort into the looks. Dropping a 911 onto a Range Rover never really worked for me and the Touareg is a much nicer looking machine to my eye.

It may have been forgivable when the Cayenne came out because most cars in that class were big, bland and boxy but Land Rover and VW are now showing that you can make a big car look smart.

Aye, I was just being a bit facetious but when I read the performance figures, fuel economy and offroad ability, it all sounded very familiar.

I'm sure the VW and Porsche are rather more upmarket overall biggrin

I could understand buying a first-generation Cayenne GTS with a manual gearbox. Could be quite fun. As regards the Toerag - they're OK, but seriously, how badly do you not want an L322 Rangie? If you're after a fast torque-monster German SUV, the Q7 V12 has that crown now. Near enough 500hp and 1000Nm and 0-62 in under 5...

The '405 is really growing on me - makes the '322 look a bit dated already. The L494, however, is almost every bit as vulgar and hideous as the L320.

Except I live on the 440m contour line in the hills of Northumberland…So they're not really chelsea tractors are they nickwillcock! A bicycle can be ridden in chelsea just the same as a Porsche can be driven round the streets. Some people actually do use cars for what they are designed for. The cayenne is a fast executive 4x4 off road capable tow vehicle that can pull 3 tons around behind it. They are also the reason that Porsche owners can enjoy a 911 today!! You should really be thankful that people like me have vulgar taste in cars my friend.

Looking at the owned by VW, not owned by VW scenarios played out over the past few years I think the 911 scenario is a lot closer to the truth than many porsche enthusiasts would care to believe..Not quite so cut and dried I agree but I think it is a given that the 911 model alone wouldn't have kept Porsche on top of the pile without the other new cars. The 996 could also have equally killed Porsches reputation, again maligned in many ways but st tends to stick!!
They give me a 14 plate Boxter s to play with the other day.. and as the supposed hairdressers Porsche !! You know the stigma spoken by some.. I was blown away by its performance across country with its DSG flat shift and auto blip coming down the box.. I am an old fashioned big engined TVR RWD type enthusiast..It still dismays me though how anyone can diss any porsche product. They are simply fantastic. I would happily take up with the Blue rinse brigade after a week of enjoying a Boxter S.

I also hate the chelsea tractor badge..When did people stop being individuals and become so easily led by media and non engineer press type nobodies !!

Comments like that should receive an automatic Ban from a motoring forum!! smile
