Ferrari 512M: Time For Tea?

The Petrolicious Ferrari celebration continues. What, you've had enough of old V12s?

Possibly, just possibly, this could be the best Petrolicious video ever. Why? Look at the ingredients. A rare old Ferrari racing car to start, one with a chequered history (no pun intended). Very fast but cursed with bad luck, the Penske Sunoco Ferrari 512M has a fascinating story. It's also being driven with real intent in the video, V12 shrieking in the sunshine and gearchanges perfectly executed.

Moreover the whole story is told by David Hobbs, the man who raced this car with Mark Donohue through 1971 and who comes across as a thoroughly nice chap. Wait until he describes entering a bend at 206mph as "a bit unnerving the first time" in an entirely matter of fact fashion. And this is a man who raced the Ferrari at Daytona, Sebring, Le Mans and Watkins Glen in one year. Can you even imagine what those races were like?

So yes, it's quite a special little film this one. Shot and edited to the usual very high Petrolicious standards, it's a real treat for a Friday afternoon.

Watch the video here.

On tickover it sounds exactly like a modern F1 car at 'full chat'.

Until you blip the throttle, anyway. Then it doesn't.

Lovely stuff.

As described in the Nick Mason book 'The noise of art', this is absolutely the best sounding car ever!

Fantastic! Can't believe I'm only the 9th person to comment on this. PH isn't what it used to be!

I've found that lately I've been getting what I like to call YouTube car video fatigue. Everything's starting to look very similar. Even so called exotica like Aston Martin's et al just don't do anything for me anymore. That's when videos like this remind me what loving cars is all about.

Nice little follow up to their other track Ferrari vids;

Lovely and purposeful. In a way the body reminds me of an Ultima from some angles.

Ultima? Wash your mouth out! (Just kidding)

Awesome, awesome things - I've been semi obsessed with both the M and the S versions ever since buying 'Into the Red', and from that got very interested in all early '70s Group 5 racers. Agree that this must surely be the most PH of PH-worthy things. Apart from Can Am cars, maybe.

Lovely - and don't forget, Hobbo Hobbs was also one of the test drivers on the Jaguar XJ13 programme. Cool or what?
