That's not a tipper lorry full of spoil. It's a large skip, typically used for metal or anything but soil/muck/spoil.

Never mind Cross Rail, there's plenty of other large construction projects which materials brought in and waste taken out via such lorries.
Yes, yes I know that but the OP was asking what was going on; I assumed he was asking why all the deaths/accidents involving heavy lorries and cyclists. In most instances it is vehicles connected with Cross Rail and that is what my post was implying. smile

I would never undertake anything bigger then a van. Even with buses I stay behind the bus and not along it.

I think part of the issue is cyclists feel pressured by motorists to always keep to the left. Cycle lanes are also put on the left, cyclists do not HAVE to use them but I bet most people - car drivers included - think its something they have to use and have to stay on.

I'd imagine some cyclists thing 'oh lalala i'm in the cycle lane where I should be, I'm doing the right thing and will be seen'.

Seeing as facilities for cyclists in London often consist of nothing more than painting the gutter green or blue and calling it a “cycle lane” it is hardly surprising that new cyclists get left hooked (not saying that happened in this case but it is the major cause of accidents between cyclists and HGVs).

It may appear to be common sense to avoid cutting down the inside, but if you are a new cyclist approaching a queue of traffic at a junction, the instinctive thing to do will be to continue down the clear, marked cycleway to the left of the vehicles.
The correct, and safe things to do – either pass on the right, or take the lane depending on the length of the queue ahead of you – are likely to feel dangerous or obstructive respectively.

I think every cyclist should view this short TFL video which is very thought provoking...

Cyclists

remember you are squishy
This is all that matters.

Don't pass on the left
Don't even pull into the advanced stop box when there's a big lorry at the front of the queue
Sit back from it and wait.
Be aware and mitigate risk as much as possible.

I say this as a cyclist and ardent defender of cyclists.
The sooner more people are aware of their own mortality, the better it will be.

I walked past this yesterday when it was cordoned off but didn't know what had happened.

Hope she recovers
I completely agree.

I sometimes cycle to work in the city - and the number of mad moves I see from cyclists every single day scares me. Cyclists jumping red lights without looking properly, cyclists just haring up the inside of traffic at junctions where there is a left turn; cyclists squeezing through tiny gaps especially when both vehicles are turning together.

I hope this poor person recovers, but from what I see a number of cyclists put themselves at risk.

No doubt Boris bloody Johnson will now invent some hairbrained scheme to save cyclists from their own stupidity to the detriment of all other road users, 'because cyclist'

"People are now calling for something to be done and several have taken to Twitter in a bid to sort it out."

Yep, the modern world's answer to everything; have a moan on Twitter, that'll sort it. rolleyes

...when they could best use the Twitter-time to peruse a safe cycling book/web-page, ETC. Will they never learn?

Those mirrors are quite possibly the worst adjusted mirrors I've ever seen. Why the heck are they pointed at the side of the truck?

This is a pitiful video and it looks like the person who shot it intentionally botched the mirror alignment just to try to make a point.

That said, I agree with the overall premise that everyone (especially bikers) needs to be extra careful around trucks.
Because it's necessary to see where the rest of the vehicle is?

I don't really understand why you'd willingly cycle up the side of something that size.

Because the ones who get "Darwinated" aren't the ones left behind to sort out the mess / grieve / feel responsible for the rest of their lives for killing someone, etc.

I assume Cyclists don't know how to drive, therefore don't know how to use a Road.

They need education.

Very sad to hear.

As others have stated, and we don't for definite, but sounds like another case of cyclist going up the left of lorry.

Not sure what the people on Twitter want's Boris to do. Wouldn't surprise me if it's something as stupid as no left turns on that junction.

Why enough a cyclist would risk it is beyond me.

Awful situation, hope a full recovery is made for the cyclist and the truck driver deals with it okay.

What I want to know is why people on bikes both pedal and motor always feel they need to be at the front of the queue? Is it a me, me, me thing and I think quite strange as the British are well known for queuing, what is it about 2 wheels that changes people?

Sadly cyclists coming up the inside of HGVs/buses at lights/junctions is something I experience on an Almost daily basis throughout the course of my working day, and after having this nearly happen to me on two seperate occasions, I got have got out to question the cyclists mentality, only to be met with a tirade of abuse both occasions.

Cyclists certainly need more education, or else these type of incidents will continue to happen.

I hope the girl involved makes a full recovery.

Man, many moons ago, the BIB used to go around schools teaching cycling/awareness of traffic, ETC. Why this is no longer carried out I know not.

Cyclists just need to have a bit more patience.. A lot I witness are like they're constantly in a race and won't lose momentum at any cost.

I've had cyclist trying to pass me on the approach to a busy junction where I need all the road.. He was behind ducking and diving side to side as I was getting position.. I moved to the right so I court swing left (whilst indicating) he tried for the gap on the inside then went straight to the right for the gap as the left pinched but ran out of room again because of my cab!! fking nutter.. This was a combination of junctions onto of each other, after that I just stopped and let him go, completely oblivious to anything that just happened. I like to think I saved his life.

There are cyclists, and then there are pedestrians on bicycles.

I think this was the latter.

They're no better than each other though.

Cyclists know the risks but are still willing to take the risk.

Pedestrians on bicycles have no idea of the risks and ride around oblivious to obvious dangers
