Porsche 944. Plenty of really nice ones about for 5k, a little more would get you a turbo. Here's an example, an s, in your budget...

Sage like advice a 944 in this price bracket should still be going strong in another five or ten years.

Looking for a 80s classic weekend toy(no full on restos) and a cheap week day hack. The budget i have is 5k.....
You can get a mint restored GTE 16V for about £4-£5k.
Mine's worth about £3k & I've been using it as my daily for the last few years. Never missed a beat & surprisingly fast. A few discreet mods & it'll also handle reasonably well.

Love this... Had two White ones back in the day. One 85 Special with the half leather & one 82 4 speed with the tartan recaros. Great memories. The 4 speed was the better car for me. Stronger gearbox & better gear ratios for much improved acceleration. yes

The 4 speed was faster in a straight line than the 5 Turbo & the Astra GTE. Done them both ... (on an airfield of course)

Can you find a decent TVR S series in budget? That would be my choice.

Bingo - £3,200

Leave you a couple of grand for a K10 / K11 Nissan Micra.
Dunno if it will necessary fulfil the eightiestastic requirement. It doesn't yell Duran Duran and shoulder pads quite like an Audi Quattro or a Porsche 944 with a pinstripe interior! But the S-Series is a hugely underrated car.

I've got a somewhat modified Chimaera 500 now and frankly I miss my S3. It was the best car I've ever owned - fast enough, fun to chuck around, brilliant to listen to and surprisingly practical. It also never broke down unlike the E30 BMW Peugeot 205 GTi I've owned from the same era (I hasten to add that's not a dig as such at the Beamer or the Pug, just a response to the inevitable cliches about TVRs breaking down and smelling of glue...)

I'd also second the 944 idea. Great chassis and a brilliantly engineered car, but quite a dull engine. They take a bit longer to get under your skin than something shouty and brutish like a TVR or one of the larier sports saloons, but they're great as a daily classic.

It has only been driven around 250 miles per year, apparently.

I quite like it though. Didn't Paul Robinson have one in Kylie Minogue-era Neighbours in the 80s?

What about an MG Maestro?
