I sold a 1.9 205 GTi for proper old car money about ten years ago, a bit up on the miles but absolutely mint. Breaks my heart every time I see one for sale now and the money they change hands for. Easily three or four times more than what I let mine go for in the same condition.

Me and my brother both had snotter £1500ish lexus LS400's. We both got better jobs and the more money, shinier car mindset kicked in, we both wanted something more involving and we both regret it. I wish i'd kept the lexus and bought a second, cheap, sportier car.

Lexus Ls400, must be one of the best cars ever built!

An interesting thread that makes you think !

Occasionally I think of the odd car previously owned that would have appreciated in value by now. But when you think of them collectively ? Wow !

XR2's - various
XR3's / XR3i's - various
Capri's - various - mostly V6 inc. RS3100 / 3.0 / 2.8
All sorts of other Ford stuff - Cortina's / Granada's etc.
American cars - various
Astra GTE Mk1 - low mileage minter
BMW's - various
Others - too many !

It doesn't seem that long ago that all sorts of interesting stuff was available at easily affordable money to anyone who was a car nut. The net must have played a huge part in driving prices up, but is anyone any better off ?

Advertised prices for decent examples seem to have virtually doubled in the last 5 years ?!

My first 7 cars....

X1/9
Alfa GTV (1979)
XR2
XR3
Astra GTE
Golf GTI
Manta GTI

All sold at a loss as they were simply getting older rather than something you would collect.

I sold my immaculate, it really was after a FULL 7 year restoration, Healey 3000 BT7 back in 2002 for £16000. Why? Because it was so nice it was a garage queen, no door locks, and perspex side screens meant no security if we went anywhere. It never saw rain. Crazy. So I sold it. Bought a 1991 Eunos, much more useable.

The Healey is worth lots now, I don't like to think about it too much.

sunbeam lotus s1 given away because i couldnt face another engine rebuild.
very clean black rs2000 custom sold for bits because it wouldnt sell as a whole car(very different times from now)
2wd saph cosworth sold at the going rate for the time but i still miss it.
flat front mk 2 escort rally car(made from a 1100 pop but with a 5 link back end and a good pinto)sold for bits and the guy who bought the shell scrapped it because they were common.
nissan 200sx with some good bits just before drifting became the thing to pretend to do.
i now have an old volvo that cost nothing to buy and will run forever(if it dosnt it goes in the bin and wont be missed)

the biggest was a '73 Porsche 914 1.8. Completely restored, just needed the engine and transmission re-installed. I literally gave it away because I was moving and could not transport it.

The other one was probably my '86 merkur XR4Ti (Sierra XR4i) Sold it for $1000 US back in the mid 90's

Mk1 Escort Mexico (genuine AVO shell etc.) with a hot 2.0 Pinto and 5 speed conversion. Very solid but in need of some work. Sold about 5 years ago for £3750, wouldn't get a good shell for that now frown

That said, what I bought 7 years ago has appreciated a lot bounce, so I can forgive myself the Escort. I do still miss it though, and if I could rewind I would never have sold it.

There must be some tears from a few ex-911 owners given what some are going for at the moment. Ditto 2-door Rangies.

Yep my Dad sold his 1969 911 about 10 years ago. No doubt it's tripled in value now.

In reality, that has just held value, keeping pace with inflation.

More Mk1 Escorts here, RS2000, Mexico, tax free modified 1100 Deluxe. All bought and sold for between £800 and a couple of grand, got out of them ten years ago when the kids took over my time. I had loads of trick Crossflows and bits as well, all sold for peanuts.
