What something vaguely 4x4 ish as where we live is off the beaten track and can get quite snowy in the winter. Also for the kids they are perfect height for lifting in and out etc, so not up for a debate on the moral choice etc!

Shortlist is down to

VW Tiguan (R line)
Nissan Juke Nismo
X3 2.0 tdi

Wildcard - Lexus CTh (Ive just read all the poor reviews!)

Has anyone had any experienc of these. I picked the nismo as its supposed to be a bit of a laugh to drive. My thoughts are go for the Tiguan but has anyone had any experience??

We have a v8 for go faster days so doesnt need to be that rapid. All big RR and co are out as she doesnt want to pay high tax etc.

Luke.

The Juke Nismo is only AWD if you have the CVT gearbox, and correspondingly the FWD version is the only way to get a manual. It depends if the idea of the CVT appeals.
They are medium hatchback sized, not much load space compared to the others mentioned.

X-Trail?

We picked up a used one last year for my girlfriend as she owns a horse, so wanted something capable of lugging around a load of dirty, muddy, stinking horrible horse accessories and for "light" off road use - bumpy tracks, muddy fields, etc. It's not a full time 4WD, but has proved quite capable so far. Think of it more of a big estate car on taller springs and bigger tyres. I imagine it would make an ideal family wagon.

Downsides - interior quality a bit naff (function over form, definitely), economy isn't great (although ours is 9 years old and makes short trips) and the engine isn't very refined (2.2dci). Not big deals for us, reliability and load space/towing capacity were our main concerns, but might be something you want to consider.

Juke is tight for space in the back - the Cumquat is by far the better option (or new x trail) if you have a couple of kids. Both the cumquat / new x-trail seem quite cheap to lease as well.

Lexus CTh is a hatchback I believe.

Also the X3 is quite a big car nowadays. I think as big as the original X5?

The Juke is tiny

Have you also considered the Audi Q3, Merc GLA or Mazda CX7?

I didn't get on with my F25 X3.

Build quality isn't great (built in the US), lots of creaks and rattles, a lot of owners having the same issues with the steering rack. The 2.0D is fine up to 50mph and then beyond then I found it too lethargic. The 3.0D or 3.5D are far better suited. This was on the pre-facelift, not sure if any of the above would have been rectified in the new model.

The tiguan is boring as hell and a bit on the small side too from what i remember. I've just gone from a mk1 ford kuga to a volvo xc60 and can highly recommend both of them, the kuga never missed a beat in 3 years and did 40mpg no matter how you drove it. New kuga didnt rock my boat too much but loving the xc60 so far. Very comfortable machine.

If you are going Petrol then the Tiguan and Q3 will be cheaper even if you have to go to the 2 litre. that would get you 4x4 as well on those two. The Yeti is also a good bet again the 1.8 Petrol will be 4x4 and cheaper than diesel to buy. (Given Mileage and age). Bit left field but the Mini Countryman Cooper S All4 is pretty roomy, has a bit of ground clearence and will get most places.
