Hi all;
Looking for some advice and any relevant experiences from anyone that has owned or driven the Mondeo 2.5T, 2007 and onwards.
Are they good to drive? I presently have a mk3 and I have been pleasantly surprised by how good this is to drive.
Fuel economy? I don't expect miracles but would it be reasonable to aim for 30 mpg on a run, I have a mixed round trip commute of 60 miles per day.
Servicing? What are the intervals? What are the cambelt intervals?
Any known faults? Things to be aware of.
Thanks for looking, any help appreciated.

Hi, I regularly get 35+ mpg from my SMax when on a run (round town is rather less frugal). I would be staggered if a Mondeo wouldn't match or beat that.

They are great to drive, superb body control.

I get 27mpg on a 15 mile mixed commute, 35mpg on a decent run if kept to 80, upping it to 85 drops in back to 30ish.

Servicing is 12.5k or 12 months, belts at 125k or 10 years.

I have a 2.5T Mondeo estate.

Fuel Economy - 30+ on a run is very achievable, I think the highest I've seen is 36mpg with mostly motorway 70ish.

Things to look out for - Clutches, they are borderline acceptable at stock power so if you plan to remap (260ish) then be prepared to be replacing the clutch. Other than that there is the Oil diaphragm, plenty of info about thanks to the Focus ST crowd.

One thing you may not take into account, the car is BIG - the width is the main issue, I find it can be a tad uncomfortable to drive in narrow town and village streets.

Other than that, I love mine, currently at 136k (bought at 116k) and I intend to run her until she will run no more.

I find this interesting - there have been plenty of threads about the Focus ST and its owners publish frankly terrible MOG "low 20''s" yet then challenged why a weightier and auto Vilvo with same engine get more economy its discarded now the as Max and Mondy same engine more weight get vastly more economy. So what gives ? Does the Focus have shocking bad drag to help explain it - or are the owners hooning everywhere?

Self-justification

My Focus ST does around 21mpg around town & my work colleagues say I drive like an old woman. I do have an occasional blast but the rest is just normal driving.

I wouldn't put up with that for what isn't even great performance. My old Audi S4 was giving me 18mpg, but had almost 450bhp as a trade off. My current TT is around 280bhp and gives me 28mpg average, and I think that's close to taking the p*ss. It would really wind me up getting 21mpg out of a nippy focus. If you're going to put up with 21mpg, you may aswell have something fast!

My Brothers 2.5T Focus RS was averaging 28mpg to a tank. That was with commuting into London daily and the occasional blast around.

The Mondeo runs a slightly different engine map to the Focus hence why you can get slightly better MPG from a standard one. I used to work for Ford and this was the engine that everyone used to steer well clear of. People are still scared of it so you can pick one up for peanuts these days!

You'd rather 220bhp v 450bhp for near on same economy
I5 over a v8?

Really?

Mpg was one of the reasons why I didn't choose a Focus ST when I bought my M5. I get around 20/24mpg over a tank of mixed driving of town and motorway, plus I get a V8 and rwd.

Consider an Volvo S60 T5. Much nicer version of the 5 pot engine with more power as stock (260bhp) and not so enormous as the Mondeo. Better fuel economy too, god knows what Ford did to the 5 cylinder engine to make it so inefficient.

Thanks for all the replies, quite a bit to consider, including the Volvo.
What got me thinking about one of these is that I am not a big lover of diesels and I do like the Mondeo, at least in mk3 form and you seem to be able to pick up the 2.5t at what I would consider to be a very reasonable price for a lot of car, although the estates do seem to command a hefty premium.
Anyway, will consider some more, thanks for the help from anyone who replied.

I struggle to understand how people make comments like this about the size of a family car - with a good sense of spatial awareness and a short time to familiarise yourself with a car then size really should not be an issue.

Have a 2007 Mondeo 2.5T Titanium X

Fully spec'd, I dont think it is missing any options, full electric interior, keyless entry, voice control, sat nav, xenon.

Pretty good on fuel to be honest and goes well. We are thinking of selling, just got a new car so its barely getting used. Drop me a message and send full info if interested.

You get alot of car for not much money!

Pretty poor mpg wise as said above, I get those figures from a 3.6 V6 with AWD in a large saloon, 300bhp 350nm

I don't think it is the actually width, but more the apparent width from the drivers seat. They have a really high scuttle/dashboard, presumably for pedestrian crash protection, which means the car feels a lot wider than it actually is.

That, combined with a piss poor turning circle, means it's like parking a super tanker...

hehe
