Hi fastdruid;
Thanks for the information, interesting and helpful with regard to the Mondeo.
I am at a loss as to understand how this has developed in to a comparison with the M5?? Completely different cars in every way.

I should possibly have added that I'm using the fuel computer mpg, I've worked it out manually a few times and if anything it's very slightly pessimistic (by less than 1mpg) so it's near enough for me.

I mostly average 24-25mpg which is almost all town driving with a tiny bit of (fairly congested) motorway a week.

The engine is wonderful, while turbocharged and there is some lag there if you go looking it's relatively lag free, you have to be trying quite hard to catch it out.

It's a bit quiet which is somewhat of a shame that you can't hear the engine[1] but does make for relaxed motoring.

It'll happily sit in 5th at 30mph and still accelerate, it'll pull 30mph in 6th and still accelerate (all the way up to ~150mph) but doesn't feel very happy about 6th below ~35-40mph.

[1] With the windows open you can hear the turbo whistle and re-circ valve "whoosh" but not with them closed.

My fuel computer says 26.9, just dropped from 27.0, and I believe that is pessimistic by circa ~1mpg as well.

The first car I have ever had that does that, most are normally optimistic to the tune of ~10% in my experience.

Do you have an average over a longer range? FWIW I averaged 31mpg, half urban (London), over six years in a 330i E90. Approx 30k miles.

No, I tend to reset it every tank and then again when I go anywhere for work.

When I got it the avg was on 29mpg but I don't know how long that had been going for.

Thanks for all the replies, quite a bit to consider, including the Volvo.
What got me thinking about one of these is that I am not a big lover of diesels and I do like the Mondeo, at least in mk3 form and you seem to be able to pick up the 2.5t at what I would consider to be a very reasonable price for a lot of car, although the estates do seem to command a hefty premium.
Anyway, will consider some more, thanks for the help from anyone who replied.
First off just found this site (just what i was looking for gj)
i have just in the past two months acquired a 57 plate titanium x 5 cyl mondeo 2.5t estate.
on the mgp on even the short runs where the car only just gets fully warm im getting around 19.5 mpg.
Not really had chance to see how it is on a long run but i must say with the 6 speed box and cruise looking forward to a long trip.
i read earlier approx 30 mpg at 80 mph ish, but some say 5 mpg differance at as little as 5 mph more or less, opinions ?
also this is my 3rd mondeo estate just what i need for work, but my first with turbo, any info on this model good or bad appreciated.
Thanks all. mike.

I have a 2.5T Mondeo estate.

Fuel Economy - 30+ on a run is very achievable, I think the highest I've seen is 36mpg with mostly motorway 70ish.

Things to look out for - Clutches, they are borderline acceptable at stock power so if you plan to remap (260ish) then be prepared to be replacing the clutch. Other than that there is the Oil diaphragm, plenty of info about thanks to the Focus ST crowd.

One thing you may not take into account, the car is BIG - the width is the main issue, I find it can be a tad uncomfortable to drive in narrow town and village streets.

Other than that, I love mine, currently at 136k (bought at 116k) and I intend to run her until she will run no more.
Just the sort of info i was looking for, ty. MIke

The cost of an M5 is £2650 more & has 75k more on the clock which will lead to bigger bills as for the fuel costs I think the M5 will be worse on fuel by a not small 10mpg on average consumption.

Not even mentioning the M5 is 7 years older!

If I didn't care about reliability or mpg and had very deep pockets I'd have the M5 but a 15yo M-car has the potential to be ruinous.
