Hi everyone this my 1st post on here,

Anyways I drive an audi TT 3.2 Quattro. I absolutely love it, recently I went for a break up to fife and drove the north fife tourist trail and north fife coastal route. It was brilliant, sun shinning, had beers on an evening in a hot tub with a lush view then BOOOOSH. back to reality! Only thing id say is be wary of the speed cameras up there cos theres loads.

back on topic, im going to be a dad soon and it looks like the vr6's days are numbered. Im looking for inspiration, for a cheap, economical, reliable car to commute in. Now ive thought about the following options..

I can get a lease car from work brand new seat mii ecomotive, with heated seats 230 a month with insurance tax and everything all I have to pay is for petrol. However some of my colleagues say it changes their tax band so they don't earn as much when they do overtime IE being taxed more cos of the car. Id have to get rid of the TT if I do this option.

I could garage the TT, and buy a cheap run about. However I need it to be a bit cool in some way. I cant be on driving round in a citroen c5. I like old Volvo battering rams but then they aren't economical so I cant have one.

or I could get rid of the TT and spend up to £4k on something.

inspiration please people!
economical to me is 40mpg atleast!
cheaper insurance and tax group the better!
The car needs to have 4/5 doors.
not bothered if diesel or petrol, probs have to go for diesel for the economy but I wouldn't write off either.

Alfa 159?

You could probably get one cheap enough you could keep the TT, and it's a bit more interesting than the average eurobox.

Welcome to Piston Heads. The answer to most of your questions will usually be MX-5 or 330d. As you are soon to be a dad, the latter would be the more appropriate answer.

you will need a car that will handle the child seat, then a booster seat for the future years, your days of sports cars are over my friend, as all you spare time will diminish as quick as your money. But on a cheerer note congratulations on your new child and I wish you all the best for the future.

Mii is too small for baby gear so you can bin that terrible idea off immediately.

What you do is flog the audi and spend the money on a classic impreza sti. Youll spend roughly the same as the lease cost on a new car every month on fuel so no loss there - plus the car wont lose money if you buy something relatively standard (ie nothing stupid glued to the outside) and with a clean shell - an early ra is almost certainly going to appreciate but you dont get airbags or abs.

The impreza has a cavernous boot, plenty of space in the back and awd means its safe so the missus has no reason to complain.

Job done no?

thanks for suggestions,

mx5 only has 2 seats so no good, although tempting! cos who ever I didn't like that day could go in the boot!
3 series is looking possible although id probs have to go for 2 litre diesel, as Itll be cheaper to run. although I would love a 330d. My mate had one n it was fun.
ROFL at the impreza suggestion, I would love to do this but I cant see it being cheaper, im getting 30 mpg out of the vr6 out of a 40 mile commute, however im driving under 50 mph on mostly highways, also I make exceptions in certain "circumstances"! it has got the extra space though.

I mite have to look at something with 3 doors then I could find something cheaper that's still fun. Ive always wanted a 106 rallye but there not really that safe or reliable.

Also I like the 2.2 diesel civics they look good on paper.

I will really only do the mii or up thing as a last resort, as I know thatll just bring me misery lol.

If its the only car In the family then get an estate and live with it for two years - its not worth the arseache trying to run something small and sporty. Once the big pram is gone you can buy whatever you want cos buggies are small.

If its not your only car then you're laughing - mine are 8 and 4 and both fit comfortably in a megane. They were fine in a clio three years ago and in the impreza during the interim.
Before the second one came along I had an mx5 whih was fine as long as the missus didnt need to come along.. id advise 4 seats or youll never get to drive it on weekends.
The meg is great on fuel and also stting fast when nobody is looking so might be worth a look as therell be some decent enough ones in budget

You'll be very surprised how well the mii or up drive, although its completely different to those other cars you've mentioned. £230 + co tax is too much though - you can buy/pcp a top of the range model for less than that.

A mii or up won't cut it with a buggy in the boot.....
the ok needs something useable day to day that will take baby stuff.

Focus sized estate will be ideal here.

Or an impreza... Winter is coming....

Saab 9-5 Aero Estate for the winter, £2k will buy you a minter.

Not the sharpest steer but the comfort, kit level, straight line speed and the ability to swallow huge loads (naughty) will more than make up for it.

I have considered the saab im put off by reliability though, them and Volvos are the only cars that will come with full leather and low miles and around 40mpg for reasonable cash in my eyes.BMW's are extorionate imo, is it just time of year, there seems to be very few bargains!

There is a mint cond audi 80 but I have been put off as its an old engine and mpg is apparently terrible lol
