The emboldened bit is what I find hardest to stomach about nice cars these days. It’s the biggest single thing that puts me off a possible 6 year old CL63 a few years from now.
Lmao, seeing as pre 2006 is like £295 so really it's an extra £200. 2 tankfuls really, if anyone is worried about that then they don't have a penny to scratch their arse with when it comes to these type of vehicles.

3 years into mine and im struggling to find anything that really takes my fancy as a replacement.

Biggest running costs are obviously fuel as i average around 20mpg and tyres at £260 each (2 years for fronts and 3 for rears). Discs and pads are pretty reasonable at circa £450 plus fitting.

Reliability wise its been sound with just one failure relating to the oil separator incorporating two-stage regulator which took a little head scratching.

The carbon build up issue of the V8 direct injection seems to be less of an issue in the S6 which is a bonus.
I have the previous V8 C5 version. Very similar experience to the above (except cheaper tax bill). Great car for fast cruising and easy winter driving. Maintenance costs not nearly as bad as I was expecting; although cam-belt change on the V8 was c. £1500.

These are definitely on my radar once my Golf R lease ends in 18(ish) months. At the moment it's a toss-up between this and a V8 S5 Coupe, although I reckon the V8 will take some beating with it's glorious soundtrack smile

I'm amazed at how many people seem to baulk at paying £500 per annum for road tax! If you can't afford £500 for tax then you really shouldn't be looking at a V10 2-tonne Audi estate as I think you'll find that the fuel usage will be far more ruinous!

But it's 2 tanks of petrol over something that has half that tax. Considering the total cost of motoring over a year, £200 extra is hardly anything. Seems a daft thing to prevent you getting into a car you really want.

I followed one of these a few weeks ago across country from Long Melford to Bury St Edmunds, twisting B road then out onto an A road in my astra gtc 2.0 cdti. We were having fun on the B road as I could just about keep up round the tighter stuff then at the Junction with the arrow strait A road I put my window down as predictably I was dropped like a stone but WHAT A NOISE! really enjoyed that....

I drive one at launch many years ago and the noise is what I remember most. Luxury-quiet at a cruise but when you floor it, the V10 really howls like a race car.

Auto gearbox was very keen to kick down and hold the revs to the red line in sport mode.

I had the lowly 2.4 A6 Avant and the only ruinous costs are petrol and periodic cam belt changes etc (front end off jobs with Audi specific tensioner/tools) tbh you know its cheap in the first place because of the expense of running it. I'd still say yes if i had an estate shaped hole in my life though

The goverment will gouge you anyway they can... can't afford a new car and the tax on it? Fine run an older one and pay them anyway :/

If that's what puts you off running one of these cars then you really are in the wrong forum ... my '94 TVR is - what - £240 a year in tax and this is another £260 which is - what - three tanks of fuel over a year. It's a negligible additional expense.

Myself ... I'd have one of these in a heartbeat ... I didn't even know they existed!

Epic cars, so understated.

I drive the RS6 of the same vintage, and don't want to get rid for anything (but must do shortly to help fund a house purchase). Pretty bulletproof really too, bar a few minor issues, but the Audi Warranty (renewable to 100k) has covered everything quibble-free. Get one, take the Mondial warranty, and you'll be fine even at 95k (well, for a year or so).

Agreed. £260 is probably only about 2 and half tanks in these (S6 or RS)! £500 a year road tax is a drop in the ocean on the running costs of a ~20mpg wagon.

Having read a number of threads on these in the Audi forum they are supposedly very reliable and not all that expensive to maintain. Fuel costs are obviously high, but having recently reduced the annual mileage on our second car to less than 4K this is the sort of thing I'm looking at.

The C6 S6/RS6 V10 has long life spark plugs they need to be changed at 160,000km or 100,000 miles. This is normally not a problem.. But due to the length of the V10 and the way it sits back into the bulkhead, the rear plugs are inaccessible and it requires the engine/gearbox to be dropped out of the car to access them. The S8 had a wider engine bay for the w12 and so this isn't an issue. Only the C6 has this 'characteristic'

Some of the early cars have had worn cylinders bores like the RS4's of the same vintage - check for blue smoke on start up or ask someone to watch as you drive giving it the beans. The ones that have been done under warranty the engine block itself was £11,000.

Nice car, nice engine, but why no manual gearbox, even as an option? That rules it out for me.

i'd imagine because it couldn't be economically fitted with one that could cope with the torque, not that they don't exist. Even though it doesn't have the same engine as the Lambo, they don't have entirely different characteristics, and the manual gallardo had to have its clutch changed every 6k at enormous expense, way above what an S6 owner could countenance.

+1 Tax is minimal on cars like these compared with other running costs.

I did some reading on these as we are pondering selling our Galaxy and these fall nicely into budget but reading about them, the fuel economy makes me worried, and I have a 350Z, that weight a tonne and a half and has six thirsty cylinders, it does 20 mpg on SUL, tales of 10 - 15 mpg put me off the S6 a bit, especially as the missus would be driving it and she "Nips" to a lot of places which would add up to a lot of fuel I see no benefit from !

12.7 to 100 mph, was thinking it would be nearer ten, quick but not startlingly so.

I love the Q car looks & the weapon of an engine - can I have a manual please?

But cars like this are in a bit of a paradox - if you can afford the running costs you can afford a much more expensive car in the first place or if this is the best car you can afford, the running costs will ruin you (may be thats why they're a bit of a bargain)

Dullest "fast" car Ive ever had the misfortune to drive....didn't even sound very good for a V10.

Better off with a fast turbo diesel...at least you get the economy.

I'm sure these are great, when they are working. My limited experience of expensive VAG failures, plus other owners running / fixing costs of large Audis would nuke the idea of these from orbit.
