Back in 2007 I did a deal on a year old S6 Avant against my 535d sport touring, it was going to cost me the grand total of £0 to do the swap, which at the time made it a no brainer.
I was so excited, and had to wait a week for it to arrive as it was coming to a local trader from Audi, it had only done 11,000 miles, was in blue with silver Recaros and carbon trim, and looked the nuts in a very understated way.
I got a call to say it was in and was going to be prepped later that day, but to come down and take it out for a spin.
I jumped in the car and headed straight over.
Got in and started it up and had a big smile, it was not over the top but had a lovely metallic rasp which reminded me of a more meaty version of my earlier M3's.
With a big grin I set off down the road.
I was so disappointed with it!!
The handling was sort of OK, but a bit behind my 535d, not much, but just didn't have that point and go feel you get from a RWD car, but liveable, but the real issue was the speed of the thing, I swear it was slower than my mapped 535d and after my quick 5 mile back road blast it was showing 8mpg, but even then resetting the thing it was only showing 16mpg taking it fairly easy.
To not have a speed gain, and for it to feel more boat like than my big diesel was such a let down, and I decided not to buy it.
For 8-15mpg I wanted to love that car, and I didn't.
I loved the space, the styling and the comfort, but it just didn't seem to work as an S car.
So I bought an M3 and a 3.2fsi Quattro Avant instead for less money.
However.......that was 7 years ago, and I am now 40, and I reckon if I had been 40 at the time I would have appreciated that car for what it is, and if I were to have one now I wouldn't be expecting anything other than a pretty quick, nice sounding, well put together and pretty family load lugger, and it does that pretty well, as long as you can afford to run the thing.

I've been running a 2007 V10 S6 for a year and I must say I've loved it. The engine is so bonkers its clear they will never make large sedans like these again. With regards to running costs, the 6yr service came out around £450 which I don't think is too bad but the car is thirsty, especially in town. It is in no way a sportscar as it weighs two tonnes but it is rapid and has a great ride especially on motorways. If you're after a fast luxury sedan its a tough one to beat but if you're after a sports car, then RS4/M3/C63 are probably better choices.
I'm selling mine as I don't have enough use for a family car in London so if you're interested you can check it out here

I remember these getting absolutely slated when they were first road tested by the main magazines for a terrible chassis (ride/handling). Remember CAR being amazed how bad this was compared to the S8 for example. Amazing how little people speak like this of it now...
S5 also got roasted for being st. barryrs said:

Do some google-fu on that company and you'll find out you never actually receive the parts you order....http://motodyne.com/frames/5.2LSC.html

To my knowledge after looking into it, the V10 in the S6 has 0 tuning potential, as others have mentioned it'd be better just buying an RS6 if you wanted to tinker

Nice and unique, but i'd rather spend my money on a similar vintage E60 M5 with that glorious V10.
Yes, the cabin in the S6 is of better quality and appearance, but an M5 is an M5 and a true super saloon (or Touring if you prefer one).
Not really up against the M5 though, is it?Yes, the cabin in the S6 is of better quality and appearance, but an M5 is an M5 and a true super saloon (or Touring if you prefer one).
More of a 550i or a 545i rival I'd have thought.

You just reminded me, when I took that one out, although the handling was better than I was expecting for an Audi, the ride was....well, it made the 535d on first generation runflats feel positively luscious. We thought there may have been a problem with the damping system, but when he called his guy at Audi to ask, that was the reason the initial owner was dumping it after only 12 months. With a £30,000 hit by the way.
I think he paid £61k for it with a couple of options and I was paying £32k from memory, £32 or £34k maybe.
But they were not exactly in high demand after the initial reviews.

I like them but I can't help feeling that most of the time you'd just lope along in it like I did at which point you may as well be sat in a dismal diesel.
That's the problem for me with these cars. Same for the AMG/M models.I can put up with an abysmal MPG in a car having 450hp... when you use it.
The thing, is, even when not pushing these cars, they'll still return (albeit slightly less) abysmal mpg. So when out with the family, or even on a trip (it's an A6 Avant ffs, you're going to use it for that), the mpg will be cringeworthy.
Of course, when you get the chance to push the pedal, it'll be quickly forgotten, but how often is that in a car like this?
I've got a feeling we've got a load of tech and cars coming that'll offer similar performance but with a lot better effecience, especially when not pushing on.
The Tesla Model S is one of these cars, but surely others must be on the way.
AsI said above, to me it made little sense, I swapped for a 2 year old 3.2fsi Quattro avant with all the toys and another SMG M3, the two cost me nearly £10k less than the S6 Avant, the M3 did the fun thing better and the regular A6 avant did the everyday car better.
Plus I didn't get bored of my car, as when I did I just used the other one for a few days until I fancied getting back in the first one again.

This for me sums up large heavy fast cars. I've owned some, but they do get tiring to run after a year or so. Yes the noise and poke can be fun, for 1% of the time. For the other 99% they just drain your wallet for no more enjoyment than the entry level models (when driving normally, as you have to with the state of modern roads). I'd say the amount of time you get to enjoy them is not enough to outweigh the costs, IMO. I can put up with an abysmal MPG in a car having 450hp... when you use it.
