Want a discreet hot hatch with plenty of power that sounds nice, just had a astra vxr nurburgring and it was not the best car I have ever had.

130i will be more understated, and faster out of the box, but the ST remaps well and is quite discreet.

Personally I'd go for the 130. A small, N/A hot hatch, last of a breed.

Just don't sit in the back! I'd go for the 130i as well, personally.

Go and sit in one, that's the only way you'll know. Unless you have kids then it wouldn't bother me, whether people can fit in the back as hardly anyone does.

The same seats and the same space up front as the 3 series.

My old man is 6'3" and about 18 stone and he used to drive mine a fair bit, and my Mum had a 118d for a couple of years that he used to drive as well.

Rear leg room is a bit of an issue, but not as bad as many make out. I have been over to Germany, Brugge etc. with the lads, 4 up and not really a problem.

It's one of the reasons I bought one. Being RWD it has proper legroom.

Very discreet car if you get one without the MSport body kit. Two kids still fit in the back as well.

I'm about to sell mine but it's an auto.

try a 130. enjoyed mine.

Try to budget for a Birds LSD though. makes it the car it should have been from the start.

There's all the leg room/ space you'd ever need in the front. The rears are a little tight but honestly how often do you use them for adults? They suit me fine for my use tbh.
It feels FAR more special than an ST will/can ever feel. The ST may be faster when remapped but there is no way it would be able to match the drive thanks to the 130s rear wheel drive.

The 130i really is a cracking hot hatch that often gets over looked, which is strange when it's probably the fastest of it's era (2005 launch date, possibly bar the R32).

Obviously I'm a tad... biased. But after having this same dilemma 1 year ago I'm glad I chose the 130. The fuel consumption is slightly worse than I'd have liked though. Average 29mpg on a 70 mile round commute of which 80% is motorway at 70mph. sticking to 60 gets high 30's if your in no rush.

Whats your budget OP ?

Get the Focus.

At least then you wouldn't have to shield your eyes from the hideous monstrosity that is a 1 Series. biggrin

My choice would be the 130i but then that's just my opinion!

If you do go down this route make sure you ditch the runflats and as previously mentioned, get a LSD fitted.

As I'll be in the market for a similar sort of car soon, I'll piggy back on this thread.

How would a standard RWD car like the 130i compare to a sporty FWD car, such as a Focus ST or VW GTI (or one of its VAG siblings) in regards to driving enjoyment?

But you do have to stare at the vulgar steering wheel with a Ford badge on it though.

ST for me, won't handle as well but is a better allrounder imo

Badge aside the ST is better all round and when you come to sell I can see more people wanting the ST that a 3.0 petrol hatch.

I would choose a 130i over the ST. Another option is the Megane sport 250?
