I love my son to bits and some of my priorities changed however my wife and I ensure we both still get time to enjoy ourselves. I bought my Aston with her blessing. It's my daily driver as she has her car.

If I want to get out for a bit of a drive I do, I often take Junior GMan with me too and he loves it.

Things do change when you have kids but you can still enjoy yourself, but I stand by my earlier post, the amount of st you have to transport with kids is unreal and personally I don't think a Polo is big enough.

+1

Don't mean to be a buzzkill but the buggy will probably fill the boot of the Polo and then everything else will have to go on the back seat or in the rear footwell. Personally, I would probably get something a bit bigger, newer and safer. You don't need an MPV or an SUV (I had an Impreza WRX Wagon), which was just the job for one child and great fun to drive. Should be able to get a decent 2004 "Blobeye" for around 3k and then you could either keep the Polo, which would probably be fine for just the Mrs and the baby or get yourself something like a more powerful hot hatch or maybe an MX5/MR2. Other option I suppose, is a sheddy family car (had a 700 pound C-Class Estate for a while, which was great, loads of space) and then you might be able to afford to get what you really want. Personally, I think you might regret it if you don't have a car bigger than a Polo on the fleet and I would probably feel a bit guilty if I was driving around in a flash sports car and my wife and child were driving around in an old banger (not saying that you should though).

In summary then, a WRX Wagon is the answer!

Quite the split opinion here then.....

I guess another option would be chop in the Polo for something larger and still get the 'toy' hehe

The Polo realistically wouldn't be worth much now but could chuck some money behind it and get something larger with great fuel economy......

Why...? My Mrs is usually very good and lets me get on with what i want, in reality she is only really joking about me being a selfish bd but it raises a fair question.

Being with someone longterm (I'm not married as I do not need a piece of paper to prove how i feel) doesn't mean your life is over. I went out Saturday night got very drunk and crashed at my mates, I go to the gym 4 or 5 times a week. My life is far from over....

We were told we couldn't have children, so while we hadn't originally planned on having them, we were over the moon to hear that we have a little girl on the way.... smile

Don't believe all the nay-sayers on here mate.... pick a good'un and you wouldn't regret it. But in the mean time slam as many birds as you possibly can.....! Trust me.... that is important wink

For the record I'm 28.... (if that makes any difference)

Kids are great buy are one facet to your life, which is YOURS. If you can afford it, do it. I've spent too many years worrying about not being able to afford what I really want...now my son is ten i'm getting hammered on school fees, trips to ski resorts, unfeasibly expensive holidays, and overpriced clothes for someone half the size of an adult. While I love him to bits it's all a very dear do, so for years i've kept money back, rainy day fund, don't do anything silly, and all that stuff.

Last week I thought fk THAT and bought a Ferrari.

Life is short, and when he's fifteen and calling you a tt for not letting him shag his girlfriend on your kitchen table, you'll be glad of those moments in your Caterfield/Boxster/MX5, whatever.

Do it.

beer

Two of my closest friends have just recently had kids at 25. I was pretty set on not having any kids/getting married prior to this, that idea is only reinforced now.

You do know how much babies cost, don't you? You don't have and won't have enough spare cash to buy a pushbike.

Love the "Yeah, fk it, I just got a Ferrari/Aston" type advice. I suspect your finances are in a slightly different league to the OP. hehe

Which explains his wife being pregnant.

The problem I have with the OP's thread is that his relationship with his wife is not an equal one. He is seeing the bonus as his, and not theirs. There needs to be a realisation that "we are in this together" and should be asking "what should we do with this bonus which would make us stronger"

Now I actually think you should look at whether you could work less hours, and use the money to fund having extra time off.

Ignore the nay sayers ref the size of the car. When our second was born, we lived with 2 cars one of which was a 1984 1.0 polo, and the other a 1994 AX 1.4D. Neither of which were fun, but then my wife became a stay at home mum, and spent 21 years nurturing them into adulthood.

I reckon bringing up our 2 has cost £200K in lost pre-tax income, and probably no more than 30K on children's ste, from cots, and prams to clothes and x boxes and phone's and driving leasons and car insurance and food and parties and all the ste that you have to waste money on. But the government has been kind and given us child benefit and tax credits. I dare not calculate it but at current rates it would be about £2500 a year.

Anyway now to be immensely smug. Child one is in his final year at university, having got 3 A*s at A level and on target for a 1st. Child 2 is in her first year at university having got 1 A* and 2 A's at A level. Both are hard working, honest, good fun and worth the investment.

As for fun cars. £1500 on the nicest MX5 mk1 is probably a great investment. My wife insisted I buy her friend's Mx5 5 years ago, and it's saved me a fortune. Everytime my daily driver breaks (not often) I don't have to worry about getting it fixed as fast as possible, because I can just thrash the Mx5 until I can do the work properly. Plus the MX5 is very simple as it has no ABS/AIRBAG/AIRCON/ELECTRIC anything.
