Love the "Yeah, fk it, I just got a Ferrari/Aston" type advice. I suspect your finances are in a slightly different league to the OP.
it's all the same principle, whether it's a £1,000 MX5 or a ferrari or aston....it's having toys vs kids.Kids win for a few years, then toys

Once baby is born your priorities will change dramatically. I'd wait until after and see if you still feel the same, I'd be surprised if you do.
This^^. All day long. You're about to have a life changing experience and all that stuff that you thought you were interested in, you probably won't be.
You'll almost certainly have exactly the same interests as before, just many fewer opportunities to devote time to them.
I have children and still ride motorbikes.

At the end of the day, without posting your bank statement on here only you know how much you can afford, don't you? If you simply have to have a new motor all for yourself, then buy it, and sell it on if/when you feel you've overspent.
That said, surely this isn't the best time to do it with a little one on the way? It's all but guaranteed that the spare cash could be useful for 'baby stuff' in some way or another, and are you going to even have time to enjoy whatever you buy?
If it was me I'd be banking the cash or ditching the Polo for a fast(ish) estate.

In the year since my nephew was born, my sister hasn't complained once about having a V-reg Fiesta as their only car. Either they're negligent parents or some people on here have Robert Baden Powell's attitude to life and carry too much stuff I think.
On another note, why does reading 'mother' or 'baby' used without the definite article make me want to vomit?

Sort of relevant? !
You can't put a price on legroom......
We started with a Golf gttdi and got bored with knees pressing into the glovebox; moved to a Golf estate as a quick fix while also replacing the kitchen in chez-Pope (not a job I will ever wish to repeat while juggling a six week old child!)
Traded up to an A4 Avant S Line as a nice family (quickish) runabout but littl'uns latest seat (M-C Axiss) is bloody massive so we're back to knees pressing against the glovebox (I mostly refuse to be passenger now!)
Back on topic regards money; don't underestimate the cost of (not?) keeping two people at home all day. Most household bills doubled for a year until Mrs went back to work and days out while daddy works soon pulled the savings down over the same time.
I bought a bike with some spare cash; convinced the Mrs it was an investment (yeah, keep telling yourself that Jon) I have ridden it a handful of times in 15 months (if I am away from work then family time is the only thing on my mind) and days are so short now (hours seem to be getting shorter don't they?!?)

Why not buy something fast, comfy and good for the family?
BMW E91 estate; 330d
Fast, economical, great handling and suitable for a family.
Two cars is over rated if you have to insure, mot, tax and service both.
You get something moderately fun, family gets what it needs. Meet in the middle.
IMHO.
If you haven't driven one yet, try it before you dismiss. 230+ bhp and 50 mpg

When son #1 was born I had a fiesta, we bought a huge big pram that took up the entire boot and was too heavy for her to push anywhere so it never left the house. Going anywhere was like moving house until we realised we didn't really need all that crap.On another note, why does reading 'mother' or 'baby' used without the definite article make me want to vomit?
Son #2 was born, the fiesta had been traded in for a newer fiesta, pram was smaller lighter and we travelled with the bare minimum.
Fast forward a few years, new woman, new son, downgraded sporty car for a daihatsu charade, pram is the size of an umbrella. all the kids stuff is in one bag unless we're going away for a weekend & even then were travelling light..
If you buy a big car you'll just fill the extra space with crap you didn't really need.

I just read your post to the Mrs.... she wants to see the Ferrari......
it's really me that wants to see it.....
it's really me that wants to see it.....
Here you go
SickFish - I think this guy has the right idea, he got the first years out of the way and settled a little. And now has a gorgeous Red Ferrari.
From my perspective, I was earning a little above the average, however we had a little 206 which we rattled around in for a few years and then a Mercedes A160. When the 2nd boy came along I bought a E39 M5 which we all love. Big car, loads of room and comfortable.
Its of course your money and your choice if it was me, I would personally bank the cash for a rainy day.
After actually sitting down with the Mrs last night and talking about this (the "selfish bd" bit is semi in jest... she is actually pretty decent as far as women go )
The option that I get the feeling she prefers is the best of two worlds.....
Spend a small percentage of the money on a nice sports bike, she hates the things but knows I desperately miss being out on two wheels, and then bank the remainder of the money for any unforeseen eventualities or a properly nice holiday when our lil'un is a little bigger.
It's worth noting that she has said "it's your money, it's up to you" but I think the bike is the best option for US because as hard as I fight it I know that I do need to start considering my family more than ever
Not very fitting with the "SWT" "smash her backdoors in" etc PH mantra but hey.... least then we are all happy.... And as a side note, I felt her kick properly last night....
..... heads off to PH classifieds

It's the weekend toy I am interested in!
Looking at it from your wifes perspective, she sees herself as just about to become a mother and you a father and having a family future together. You see yourself spunking £6,000 on a weekend toy for YOU.I'd imagine any friction is coming from the disconnect between what she needs you to be - a caring parent - and what your priorities are at the moment - a sports car to go out in on your own at the weekends.
I could see why she might be having issues with this - particularly given you seem determined to spend it on a weekend TOY for YOU, rather than on at least something that can be used by all of your new family.
