Am I being a selfish b@$&%£d?
Discussion
Okay, back story.... I have a decent home with the Mrs who is pregnant and baby fish is due end of January.
As we are in the final 1/4 I have started casting my eye towards the end of the fiscal year it looks like I will be getting a fairly decent end of year bonus, mainly because I have worked my arse off.
Now... I'm thinking want to spend this bonus money on me... after all, I have earned it! Mrs seems to think otherwise....!
My current car is a 1.6 6N2 Polo GTi (5 door) whilst it can be entertaining it is a far cry of cars I have previously owned:
- DC2 ITR
- RX7 (FD)
- Heavily tuned euro hatches etc
- Various sports bikes
I miss having a "silly" (read: PH-worthy) car and I see having this money at the end of the year as a reward for the long stressful days and nights of working my arse off.
So, would I be entirely selfish to buy a 2nd car for me ideally I would be looking at spending around £5-6k. The Polo would not be the worst "family car" even if it was just for the initial few years while baby is growing up. It is a 5 door, relatively roomy and has been a good reliable motor since I have owned her (gearbox imploding excepted as it was/ is a known fault on the 6N2 gearbox).
There are two options that present themselves:
- Buy a nice car that I can have for weekend and sporadic hoonage
- Buy a sports bike that I can have for weekend and sporadic hoonage (and save a couple grand).
I have always fancied an S2000, I do have a garage and driveway so keeping the two cars would not be an issue, can a decent S2000 be had for the budget? (I am open to other suggestions along this vein).
Or, thinking aloud, can a Caterfield type car be had for that money?
For those that do not want to read all that ^^^^ here are the bullet points:

- SickFish wants to spunk £5-6k on nice weekend car, Mrs is resistant
- Can I convince Mrs that the Polo GTi is a good family-wagon
- What should I buy?
- Am I a selfish bd and submit financially to the Mrs to buy six grand's worth of hooker slap
Hate to be the boring one.
How are the finances in general? Holidays and experiences, things for the baby and home will be much more useful and will make your life more fulfilled as a family than a new car will.
If things are good and this is money that if you didn't receive it you would't miss it I see no harm in buying the car.
How about buy the car and something nice for Mrs Fish?

Finances are above average, but by no means wealthy. We have been very sensible and we already have everything for baby. Nursery is decorated and fully kitted out etc and has already been spoilt! How are the finances in general? The bonus is on top of my annual salary so is exactly that... a bonus.
do it, treat yourself. if you buy right you can get something fun, within budget and if you need to free up equity it can be sold on.
It could be an invetment if done right, and if anything it's an investment in your personal happiness.
Just make sure mother, baby and home don't have any sacrifices as a result

Anyone want to buy a teenager? I've invested almost 1/2 a million in my pair and quite frankly I'm disappointed in my returns thus far
A few thoughts having recently had our own first offspring:
1. Polo won't be big enough for anything more than pottering about. Even if you can "make do" with it, you'll soon be wishing for something bigger
2. Assuming you plan to help out with the baby at weekends and so on, you won't have as much time as before to enjoy cars. And cars won't seem nearly so interesting or important.
3. The "it's my money, I'll spend it how I want" attitude suggests you're putting yourself first, ahead of Mrs and baby. So, in answer to the original question, and given you've asked, I'll go with "yes".

What about a fast estate? Best of both worlds?
335i Touring?
S4 Avant?
etc..
because a little hatchback isn't big enough for a child and the plethora of extras needed.
A small estate might do it, plus you can win the OH round by saying it's " a practical estate" which always happens to have a huge engine and go like stink.
to answer original question....
To a point no, but 2 seat sport cars may be seen as taking the piss a little. A bonus is extra money, if you have everything you will need (other than day-t-day supplies) then I'd say spend it on something that will have practical uses as well as thrills.(I have no kids, so IDK.)

You are asking a question to a premise that you yourself have set out. People only ever do that when they know the correct answer isn't the one they want to hear.Lets put it this way, you can buy it, have a bit of fun, sell it and forget about it. Then every time you piss the missus off for the rest of your life, you'll get:

you picked a car over your son/daughter
Do it now and you'll be fked forever. Squirrel some cash away and buy at a slightly less diplomatically sensitive time.Buy a lot of Lego to keep you amused in the small hours of the morning when the little bugger is keeping you up!!!!
As for the car. It's your money however in all seriousness as other people have said don't underestimate just how much it costs when you have a youngster.
If you do however decide to say 'fk it, it's my money' buy a Porsche Boxster & a decent car seat for the little one.
That way when swmbo has 'one on her' as they do at some stage you can do your child-minding bit by taking said youngster on a hoon!
