I do not like a sales model where you have no scope to negotiate or change dealers if one gives poor service
I don't like this model for the same reasons as you. Although results speak volumes, Apple have a brilliant product that can't be customised... but it doesn't break, it works very consistently. Also their customer services is brilliant.

In theory it stinks but in practice it works.
apples basic CS is reasonably good, however get something more complicated like trying to recover app licences assigned by configurator for equipment thats been stolen and they are as terrible as most companies, dozens of calls, explaining the situation in detail over and over again only to be told at the end that's a different department again and again ...

Funny how there are so few car manufacturing companies in a country the size of the USA. This could be an indication as to how that has come about.
Watch "Flash of Genius", great movie.
Instantly wants you to never buy a Ford again.
Seconded, a great film. However it is unfair to single out Ford, the other US makers were just as guilty.
Thanks for the heads-up - just spent lots of free time today dipping in and out of this piece in the New Yorker all about Dr. Kearns and his lawsuit - http://www.newyorker.com/magazine/1993/01/11/the-f...
- including the excellent Doctrine of Nonbviousness.
