The Myth of the M25 Speed Camera
Discussion
I can say that about 3-4 weeks ago I was blasting round the M25 near Clackets Lane heading towards Dartford Tunnel way and was probably doing about 88mph (sadly I didn't travel through time). It was late, I was late and I was the only car in sight and got lit up like a Christmas strobe light tree passing underneath a gantry. There were no temporary speed limits indicated or lane closures etc, just normal empty dark motorway.
I waited with trepidation but it is now well over 14 days after and received nothing, however I have no idea if there is a selection that are working or whether they are not active for the 70mph limit.

I'm hearing this exact same story from a lot of people , I think they maybe possibly produce fines when a variable speed limit is being shown on the gantry.I waited with trepidation but it is now well over 14 days after and received nothing, however I have no idea if there is a selection that are working or whether they are not active for the 70mph limit.
Were the speed matrix signs on the gantry showing?
I know that if someone gets flashed by the camera, but the LED matrix sign showing the speed limit is malfunctioning (that could mean, 1 out of the hundreds of LEDs which make up the sign doesn't work), then the fine is automatically cancelled.
That's one way you can spot which gantries have a camera attached. A few hundred yards before the gantry, at the side of the road, is a pole holding a set of CCTV cameras - these are pointed at the LED matrix signs, and designed to determine if, at the time the speed camera functions, if the relevant matrix sign is not displaying correctly.

I've spent plenty of time on the managed motorways all over the UK. When it's displaying NSL, I just sit at 70 with cruise on. Plenty of people come past you. On the M25 in particular almost everyone comes past you.
For the sake of trying to go another 10-20 mph whilst the time you're in the speed camera area, I just sit back without the worry of did I get caught or not. It's not going to save you that much time.
The way I see it is there is a speed camera there, if they choose to put it on and you are doing 80, be happy and prepared to take the points.

From what I can remember there was nothing showing.I know that if someone gets flashed by the camera, but the LED matrix sign showing the speed limit is malfunctioning (that could mean, 1 out of the hundreds of LEDs which make up the sign doesn't work), then the fine is automatically cancelled.

Having had to use the Northern arc of the M25 quite a lot lately, I have seen these gantry cameras flashing quite a lot, (fortunately not on the side of the road I was on) I am assuming they track the speed of vehicles moving away from them. but can they also collect vehicles travelling towards them on the opposite carriageway?

Your 35th post was correcting grammar, congratulations.
Thanks.American-English really gets on my tits. For example, people at a bar "Can I get......" No, you can't. Unless you go behind the bar and serve it. What's wrong with "Please may I have"? That's the correct way.

The Dartford Bridge ones are real. Grrr 62mph, Grrr 4.30am, Grr not another car in sight, Grrr Awareness Course.............
That's odd. Many years ago, before the bridge, I was caught making progress in the tunnel by a following police car. Got a fine, but no points as it was not past of the highway. Worth looking into that I reckon.Terminator X said:
M25 gantries only on when limits are reduced. Allegedly you will get a ticket above 90mph though. I used to go through daily at 88 on speedo with no ticket.
TX.
Re 90, is this folklore or confirmed by anyone? My lad has been claiming it to be the case for some time time now and we stay under just in case, but it would be good to know anyone who can confirm they got done by one for over 90.TX.

They only track vehicles travelling away from them, just like an ordinary GATSO.Gassing Station | General Gassing | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
