It would nice for the 4 pot not to sound like a a bag of spanners on spin cycle, like the 6 pots do now.

I suspect a flat four turbo will be very tune-able - 350-400 HP?
Could be. But larger bhp outputs won't be reserved for the base model...

Please please please don't let them pipe some daft synthesised sound into the cabin to make it sound more sporty.

That stuff is just bks. If a sports car can't sound sporty by any form of mechanical means, then it's not really a sports car...

Sounds like a good way to a cheaper and lighter Cayman. Which would be ace.

But IMVHO they'll screw it up. They will make something with a very FI like power delivery because they will feel the need to increase the power over existing cars (to counter downgrading criticism). In the process of making that driveable, the weight advandtage will be lost to anciliaries. And to make it sound decent they'll resort to faking noise even more. And realistically, it's never going to be cheaper, is it.

A lot less CO2 and a good improvement of real world fuel economy coming up though.

Playing fake sound through the speakers is a worry. Pipe from the engine bay isn't so bad - less sound proofing so to speak.

It is a Porsche shopping trolley rofl

Porsche do need to improve the Cayman and Boxster with faster, more tunable, turboed engines. The current models are now starting to look very dated and slow. Frequently getting smoked by everyday cars like the A45, R, M3, and so on.

Seriously ? Cars don't get smoked. Drivers do.

I guess it kinda puts it in the sphere of the Alfa 4C so I'm not surprised.

Regarding 'purist' issues, I think using a flat-4 engine is far less of a tarnish on Porsche 'pure-ism' than their SUV range which are pretty vulgar.. (but sell well)

Lots of people looking down there noses at a cheaper option for this fantastic car, wonder what they will say when it turns out to be the better handling option going for the lightest engine......

Fluke ? People don't want 'a cheaper option' they want something that in days gone by were virtually at the level of a 'Lamferati'. An expensive race bred wunder machine.

1.6 turbo porsche, 210bhp similar power to a Kia Pro_cee'd GT 1.6.
I much prefer the porsche any day, but would be cheesed off with people telling me a Kia has the same power.
have to keep saving for a 3.4 6 cylinder, though i suppose these 1.6's will be a lot cheaper than the 6's.

From the CAR article, it may be that the 1.6 has no home now the sub-Boxster car has been dropped;

There is uncertainty over the smallest flat-four, the 1.6. It was originally conceived to be part of the ‘baby Boxster’, codenamed 551 and could have gone on to power the sister VW and Audi sports cars.

But the 2.0 and 2.5 engines are confirmed and much of today’s Porsche line-up will eventually be offered with the larger-displacement units, as tastes and taxation systems increasingly favour lower-emissions engines.

According to CAR’s sources, the Boxster/Cayman and Cayenne will get the flat-fours first. A six-speed manual or seven-speed twin-cluch PDK transmission will be offered.

So, the entire Porsche range is going turbo it seems. I expect the following:

Cayman - All 4 Cylinder, all turbo
911 - all 6 Cylinder, all turbo, with the top of the range to have some sort of hybrid drive

Meh.

Porsche have never been out huge power outputs. The quality of drive train from Porsche is typically excellent and the modest power outputs allow them to have surprisingly good fuel economy.

Well unless you've got a P1 Mclaren then that logic can be applied to any car!

So a ~200 bhp, flat 4 sports coupe, weighing about 1300 kg for £30k...

That's the GT86 ;-)

I bet this will be hailed as the next greatest thing, despite being so close in spec (in Base from) to the GT86

Eh? When are M3's, A45 etc "everyday" cars? A180's and 320d's maybe...
