A 20 mile walk in the desert can be a long way. water is a heavy thing to carry.
He must have had some tool kit for those mods no wonder the poor thing broke it's suspension.

Maybe he spotted Dick travelling past, and he asked Dick to take the photos? Piece of cake! He was probably glad of the company, after that long alone in the dessert he was probably ready to crumble!
