chuffing noise (car issue)

i have a strange chuffing noise in one of the cars that rises slightly with engine speed goes with clutch depressed. clutch doesnt seem to slip BUT it has had clutch cable replaced previously. im thinking something clutch related but just want to try confirm that.

any ideas

if it goes when pedal is depressed, is it in fact linked to engine revs? Ie it might not be the clutch. I'm thinking alternator belt they tend to make that sort of noise when they get old, a bit looser etc Also colder weather tends to bring this on.

alternatively clutch release bearing.

yes depress clutch it goes, dont seem to be able to hear it outside car either but is quite noticeable inside the car

when i say linked to engine revs i mean it gets faster the faster the car goes to a certain point but its not a noise thats happening 3000 times a minute its a relatively slight change in frequency of the noise and belt noise i would be able to hear outside the car id think quite easily

mainly its the wife just had a look clutch kit is £80 ish then id imagine 4 hours labour ish is that about right
