RE: Shed Of The Week: Rover Metro

I believe there are only 67 of these vehicles left SORN'd or taxed now.
There's a fecking good reason for that!Concours condition? I'm forming a mental picture of the guy who owns a Metro in concours condition. I imagine a steely George Clooney look-alike, casually fending off the many attractive women vying for his attention while he stands proudly in front of his refurbished Hydragas suspension at the local Classic Rover event. No, wait...
What's really disappointing is that PH knows full well that this is a massive turd and has placed this here to generate traffic on the forums. Hey it's worked, I've posted! But after MANY years on PH, I'd have to say this is a new low.
PS. I've had the extreme misfortune to have two of these hateful little steboxes in our family. Would pick a similar period Fiesta XR2 over this every single day of the week.
Is it better than no car at all though?
I'm buying my first house and might have to do without a car for a while because of the costs involved. It's (the Metro) not the best bit of engineering but if it's cheap and reliable then it's still far better than the bus (last time I was on a bus I got threatened by a nasty looking drunk).
This is PH though and I was hoping to read about a better SOTW as even if I can't afford a great car I love reading about them.

History has not been kind to the Metro, it had the bad luck of being an outdated design, rehashed for too long and ultimately became a bit of a joke.
I learned to drive in one, a 1.1 K series and to be fair it seemed ok to drive at the time. Never have and never will own one thankfully.

This car has just been put in SOTW to provoke the same old same old.
"Shrug" This weeks choice does nothing to pique the interest of anyone who's been on PH long.
Its just encouraging readership "churn" of the product that is a commercial web forum these days.
You need to change your username as I am confused. "Shrug" This weeks choice does nothing to pique the interest of anyone who's been on PH long.

I agree with your basic point though. SOTW should pick only Cavaliers and the like so as not to provoke any of that awful forum chat.
Dreadful vehicles, but got some interesting memories of travelling in them.
Nearly missed a uni exam when one conked out and wouldn't restart. The same one was stolen, used as a getaway vehicle in a robbery, then recovered when it broke down.
Recall being in another through some deep water after heavy rain and it filled rapidly but didn't drain out.

Pretty sure you're going to die or be mangled enough to want to have in any road traffic incident. Awful, horrible things.

When it came out What Car gave it a full 5 stars and proclaimed it a class leader...
What Car Azerbaijan?Seriously, when it was launched it was highly regarded. Especially when you considered what the opposition was.
I had many good memories of my 1.1L Red 3 door Rover Metro (one of the first lot with the Rover Badge). I think I'll keep the memories intact rather than splash a grand on this one (everyone knows red ones go faster). Tend to burst into flames if hit from behind IIRC.
If you've never driven such a light car on the motorway then you have never truly experienced crosswind.....

Comical. People here revere Caterhams and Westfields, and admire Citroen AX's and Saxos that are just as 'dangerous'.
Second time I've seen that, and I've got to point out the AX and Saxo (though you wouldn't want to test them) did fare better than the Metro in crash tests, and in the real world (speaking from experience I gained working in a bodyshop). You've also got to consider the majority rusted so badly, the original structure wouldn't have performed as it was designed to when new as there would be rot around countless spot welds etc. Mind you, the same could probably be thrown at a 1987 Golf or BMW E30, so what quantifies 'safe' exactly I wonder? They're all only tested when new. I'm speaking as a pro-Metro voice on this thread, but the crash performance of them is particularly bad. I've got an old mag extract from the old Euro crash tests in the early '90's. The AX had a 2 star rating, the (then new) Saxo and 106 had 3, Fiesta mk4 and Punto had 4 star, and the Metro had a 1 star rating, and that was only because 1 was the lowest they could score I still fancy a Metro GTi one day though, or an early 1.0/1.3 4-speed in really basic spec. In yellow, or beige!
Bang on about the Se7ens though, and probably most TVRs for that matter. If I binned my S1, I know there's not so much a crumple zone in front of me, just a load of randomly positioned spikes wrapped in bits of broken glass!
