Yes I've had a couple as stop gaps in the late 90's. One I hated so much I cut it up with a disc cutter one afternoon. 3 cuts and the engine was out. Hateful, cardboard, slow, goppin piece of st. Shed of the week? ste of the week, more like.
This all day long.

I am enjoying the love for the Metro, funny how this one remains for sale, I mean with so many of you that seem to have a soft spot for them wink

I'd have liked to do that. With maybe a shotgun or something slow to destroy it.

I'd also like to give one to an american. Have any yanks commented on this SOTW yet? Be interesting to hear their take on it.

Soft spot? yes, spare parking spot? nope (anyway my next Rover purchase'll be a MG ZT260 just as soon as I've found somewhere, with garage and inspection pit, to call my own).

Hydrolastic suspension was one of the best things about the Metro. A brilliant system applied to the wrong car.

It's still for sale because ;

1/ It is badge engineered crap

2/ It is way way overpriced

3/ THIS is a real Rover

Exactly - and this too, though very different to the P5, is also a real Rover:

...the comfort and build quality of a Mercedes-Benz and most of the dynamic capability of a BMW (if anything, it handled rather more securely than a 2002 or similar...), plus the refinement of a Rolls-Royce. I still miss mine and I'd have another in a heartbeat if I had a proper heated, ventilated, dehumidified garage. The rust was what killed it in the end, just as it killed so many great German cars of the same era.

Quite. I just don't see it being possible within the constraints of present safety legislation. The BMW MINI seems to get good reviews for its handling, as does the Suzuki Swift and also the old naturally-aspirated Renaultsport Clios and Twingos, but I wonder how close they really get. I actually wonder if Sniff Petrol's joke Peugeot doing a limited-run re-production of the 205GTI on condition we all shut the fark up about the sodding 205 GTI isn't such a bad idea. Put it through IVA/SVA or whatever the equivalent is in overseas markets (particularly France). If Jaguar can do it with the lightweight E-type... or are those based on existing donor cars, like Eagle's Low Drag?

It is a case of a good car made too long, rather than a car which was crap from the start.

They were reasonable cars for what they were. me mum had a couple of old ones in the early 90's before moving onto polo's.

But when they were tarted up with the rover badge on in a vain attempt to drain the last life out of what was left of the company it epitomised all that was wrong, a once cutting edge product now outdated, badly made, etc. Fellow apprentice had a couple brand new in the late 90's because of the free insurance, they seemed to come with factory mile with rust already on the sills.

It's not a petrolhead car because it's actually a sad indictment.

My mother had a heated rear window in her Metro to keep my fathers hands warm when he was pushing it

He also asked if it came with a sun roof and twin exhausts so he could use it as a wheelbarrow when it was broken

This isn't an A series car so the engine and box are more akin to the Rover 200, so no whine, funny how gearbox whine and crash worthiness are such issues but if this has been a 'real' Mini no one would have mentioned them? At the time with the choice between a Metro and a Fiesta, it wouldn't have been the Ford.

I sincerely hope you realise these 'jokes' were doing the rounds when Skoda Estelle's were trying to be the cheapest new car on sale (or something like that.)

Did your Ma & Pa ever realise how easy it was to double the value of the car? Fill the tank! Hahaha!

So, 5 pages of posts with maybe 50% loving and 50% hating, yet the hateful stebox/lovable appreciating classic (delete as appropriate) is still for sale.

Come on, powerful richboy PHers with acres of land and triple garages. Money where your mouths are... who would dare buy it and run it til the MOT ran out?

I've never owned a Honda car - are they any good? - I'd value your thoughts as you own two now and and have owned another previously
