back in the late 80's i worked at weekends / after college for a local car dealer (arthur daley character), he used to joke if someone pulled up in a metro he could sell them the biggest pile of crap on the lot..... he wouldnt take one in p ex but convince the owner to do sale or return deferring the balance untill the metro was sold..... usually it wouldn't sell so off to the block it went (one of my jobs) - some didnt sell there.

Without doubt an absolute pile of rubbish, its up there with allegros, ambassadors and talbot rancho's.......
I worked at a car dealers in the 80s and he made a lot of money out of Metros, just another car.

And still better than an RX8 !

Aside from the usual wankel issues, what's wrong with the RX8? I always rather liked it.

Funny, while I was having my lunch yesterday, I wondered how many people have driven some of the older cars on here and if not, then try to make informed comments !!!

Down the years I have driven many cars, some bad, some good.

I saw some comments about the Rover Metro.

I still have her and it's probably one of the finest ones in the UK, a 1990 Rover Metro GTi 16v spi in red.

When I bought it, I knew all about the faults with BL cars, so decided it would be a dry weather car only. I treated my old 1973 MG MGB GT V8 the same way and it's still in mint condition with the new owner and is very valuable and desirable now.

All cars made in years gone by had rust problems so one had to be aware of it.

When the Rover version of the Metro came out in 1990, magazines voted it the best small car of the year because of it's many virtues.

Sure it dated as time went by especially regarding crash resistance, hence the 1997 discontinuance.

But with it's low weight and my car with Motobuild modifications developing 110 bhp sure makes it a rapid car. It's cornering and handling is go-kart like, the interior is well finished and the ride comfortable despite the firmer suspension.

The Hydragas suspension in the Rover version was finally connected front to rear which provided a good ride unlike the Austin/MG versions before it.

Sure more modern cars have great features but many of them have lost their character and seem the same to me when driven.

If I was buying a small car today, the Fiat 500 comes to mind but would have to drive one first. A sports coupe - An Aston for sure.

Cherishing my Metro has paid off financially with it's high agreed value.

Likewise with my 1997 Mazda MX-6.

Talking about classic cars fetching high prices.

This totally mint Mk 1 MG Metro Turbo ( a rare car indeed) belonging to a Metro Owners Club member recently sold for £15K.

The person who bought it is well pleased with the car and investment.

Prefer my GTi Metro though with it's more up to date engine, gearbox, suspension and revised body and interior.
