Cars please you admire and can purchase but reason you don't.
I would have purchased a 7 or 8 year old Citroën C6 (which I've always admired) but the fuel economy puts me off.
And yet I have one because, irrespective of the fuel economy (which isn't TOO bad) it's a bit different in a sea of mediocre designI would have purchased a 7 or 8 year old Citroën C6 (which I've always admired) but the fuel economy puts me off.

-L322 Range Rover, scared of bork (also foolishly entertain P38s as winter beaters- no real mechanical knowledge)
-996 911, scared of IMS bork, perhaps more than I should be
-Maserati 3200/ 4200, bork again
-E46 M3, splitty floor
-R230 Merceds SL, from Mercs prime bork period
-Boxster 986 2.7/ S, same as 996 really
-Early Cayenne, various reasons
-Various Caterhams/ Westfields, I'd use them too much and park them for too long when they went wrong
I could spunk £10-12K tomo, and 996s are starting to look better as time goes by. IMS seems to not be as common as interweb horror stories have us believe, but can I live with the constant worry of a bill that big? My research suggests that preventative work (outside of routine servicing) isn't worth it, even specialists saying that if IMS isn't playing up, it's best left alone- so there's not even that to put my mind at ease. If I had say £15K that I could hold back £3-5K of in a cardboard box then maybe I'd have taken the plunge by now.
Of all those mentioned above, the E46 and 996 are the ones with lowest risk of depreciation. Are there night school courses in man maths available?

E92 M3: I'm lucky enough to have driven every 3 series variant and this is my favourite. The trouble is I'd be spending £600 a month on fuel and god knows how much on servicing and tyres. The saving I make by running my bog standard 3 series pays the running costs of my 2-11 twice over...
If it wasn't for my need for roof bars and interior space then there are a number of GT cars I'd like and can afford: Maser 4200, Porsche 996, Lotus Esprit V8 etc; I just know my heavy mileage would ruin me. I intend to get one for occasional use in the future though.

But I just might. Stripped out maybe, with a
Ford Cosworth engine...caged... would that be too much? Gosh I'm tempted. Maybe a 205T16. Gulp. I wanted one so badly in 1985, want one no less in 2014 T C Harrison at Averham you are responsible.

Evo IX 340. Stupidly small service intervals and a tiny range.
GT3. A CS is a must but buckets and a cage as an only car is just not practical.
Hawkeye Impreza. Cheap interior and a massive rear wing are a no go
355. Impractical as my only car and would be expensive as I do around 18k miles a year.
R8 V8. Impractical and it is not the V10 plus I would really want.
C6 RS6. Quick but boring to drive.
