I guess life just isn't smiling at me at the moment.

My driving licence is about to expire and DVLA are to busy to do me a new one.

My SDi engine grenaded itself a few weeks back.

I've had the van back a fortnight, and the gearbox seized, actually locking the wheels (very fortunately the car behind didn't hit me).

You know when things juts aren't going your way ?

This VW Caddy is making my old Rover 75 (the previous worst vehicle I'd ever has the misfortune to own) look reliable.

Who me ?

And this is why I'd never own a modern VW... Old man and a friend both own a passat and have both been plagued with problems. Never again they say.

3 passats and 1 golf, all taken from 0 to 150000 miles. Between them 3 light bulbs and a screen wash pump.

My 2 year old Golf TDi is going in for a new DMF, clutch and gearbox next week at 40k. Apparently DMF failures are common on the Passat but less so on the Golf. VW want the car for four days.

That's really crap , a shame the bloody thing didn't set on fire instead ( without anyone in or around it! )

I have not been impressed with my limited experience of VW group products. My old Fabia 1.4 16v piston rings being shot at 85k did not impress my and soon after the gearbox was starting to jump out of 5th if I remember correctly.

Japanese Petrol all the way for me!

Hope your luck changes soon!

There's a reason that of the top 10 best selling car's in the USA, not one of them is a VW.

They won't touch them with a barge pole in Americaland, their reputation for reliability is horrible.

Hi Nigel

Don't worry too much about the licence, I had the same when renewing. DVLA will say you can still drive until a decision is made, even if the current licence has expired. Make sure you get this in an email though just to cover yourself.

Only issue I had was I could not hire cars as none of the hire companies would accept my expired licence.... luckily I had work colleague with me who took on driving duties.

Seems the DVLA are always behind - I sent my documentation off within 48 hours and they still took about four months to get things sorted.......

4 days? What are they doing? Making a custom DMF for it from locally mined metals?
My local Indy did the DMF on the wife's Touran for £600 in an afternoon.

not what you want to hear, but my 2003 A3 (1.9 Tdi 130 sport) is now on 183k miles and still has the original clutch, DMF, gearbox etc. i've had it from new.

in that time all that's been replaced is:
battery - at 6 yrs
radiator - at 8 yrs
alternator - at 10 years.

nothing else apart from a minor service every 10k and timing belt every 60k. discs and pads a couple of times. my tyres last about 45k.

really can't fault it - ok, it's not the most dynamic car to drive, but it just does everything well and it very well built. it corners OK, even when pushed a bit, and with an overall average of 50 mpg (550-600miles to 50L), i just can't bring myelf to change it. i'd get pretty much nothing for it and the cost to change just isn't worth it for me at this point.

The timescale does seem ridiculous. My VW dealer tech mate did the clutch and DMF on our mk4 TDI 130 in a 2 and a bit hours after work one evening. It was the originals at 126,000 miles as well. The DMF would have probably been OK had I not driven it around with a slipping clutch for 5,000 miles. The heat killed it, he reckoned.

12 years no problems in 100000 miles, still runs like a new car apart from the paintwork.

This is the opposite of what I hear. The Americans I've talked to think that diesels run forever and I think the only reason a VW isn't so popular is because of the price. I'm not in the VW fan club but I'd rather sit in a modern VW than most of the cars glued together over there.

Aren't the American ones built in America? Might have something to do with it.

I've now had seven Golfs. Barely spent a penny on them bar routine servicing.

Wouldn't surprise me if diesels do live forever in Americaland, as more probably get a decent run every day rather that a 20 minute commute in heavy traffic.
