Surely something with a Volvo badge.
V70XC D5 would be my choice.
A diesel with a 2 mile journey each day? Feck that! It's asking for trouble.

Petrol all the way!!

1 mile to the station = a walk. Shirley??
We leave early
We get home late
The road isn't brilliantly lit
We have to dress smartly for work
We have a gym at home & don't need the exercise
We don't like getting cold or wet
We cycle in the summer
All of those apply to me (apart from cycling and having a gym at home, but I don't need the walk for exercise) and I can manage the mile walk to the station.

If you're insistent on wasting spending money to do this journey, why not get a taxi?

ETA: to answer the thread title, yes it's stupid.

I seen a few cars locally that look like they fit the bill:

Mk4 Golf V5 170BHP - nice one for sale for £1250 locally - love the way they look & fact they have xenons etc, but have a gut feel this a complete money pit however for a £1k car it's not the end of the world if I only get a year or two out of it
Toyota Rav4 - good selection from about £3kish with under 100k miles
Honda CR-V - again £3kish will get the spec I want & under 100k miles
Ford Focus 1 - seen a nice full leather auto 1 owner one for £2.5k
Go for the Toyota.

Reliable, and won't object (too much) to constant short journeys.

Plus, women love them = double win.

I bought a 2004 Audi a4 Estate tdi with low miles for 3k. Don't think it was a once in a lifetime deal, it's clean, under 100k, feels solid and drives better than my newer car. As for winter tires go, they're leathal in our climate unless you can be bothered to keep an extra set in your garage for the 10 days a year you will be needing them

Subaru Legacy.
As far removed from a bad boy imprezza as you can get, plenty with leather about. 2.5 auto most economical due to long gearing - and wifey can't rev the nadgers off an auto.
I've had 2 - lovely lovely cars, just don't tell everybody, oh hang on.

If you buy something with a small engine economy will still be poor doing the station run.
