I have to HATE the Stratos.
Nothing about the car itself but the sheer fact that when a former customer of mine ( knowing my then love of all things Italian and not just the cars) chucked me the keys to his one ( if it was a replica it was a st hot one ) and suggested we take it for a spin.
Great.
Getting in was a feat in itself, which is where it stopped being funny. Due to the rather lengthy length of my lengthy legs I couldn't even shut the bloody door without prebooking a knee replacement op.
Bitterly disappointed, therefore no love at all for that thing. I wanted to love it, I really did.
Hmmmmm a theme is emerging with you? Not many of us worship BMW (most seem to hate them in fact); it's just that none of us have ever heard an M3 CSL called 'bland' before I'm not a fan of Fords or Vauxhalls, but I wouldn't call the Focus RS or VXR8 'bland'!
Incidentally, are you implying that the M3 is just cosmetically different (i.e. 'tarted up' as you say) to the standard 3 series? That might explain things. If so, then that's not true - the M division fit entirely different suspension to it (and I mean different suspension, not just different springs and dampers), a totally different rear diff and the engine is quite a lot different (and subjectively feels and sounds like a different engine altogether). There's some interesting tech docs on google if you search.
As far as I'm concerned, anyone making a front engined rear drive practical daily driver in this day and age is to applauded, because all the pressures from the buying public are pointing towards cheaper more spacious front drive cars. You may not like certain things about BMWs, but in a world of wobbly front wheel drive boxes, at least someone cares about handling and, judging by the 135i, 330i, 335i, M3 etc, they care about performance too. Sure, I prefer my Lotus to drive, anyone sane would, but like most people I need a 4 seater practical car and I'm just jolly glad I can make a choice that handles well, because it's handling I care about above all else. That's not worship, it's just a case of "what else would I buy?". I can't answer that question really - I don't know what else I would buy with my criteria.
Don't waste your breath. When somebody writes off one of the finest engines made in recent times as 'tarted up' it speaks volumes. Most people who 'hate' something are a bit daft, it's a car and unless it is a 1980's Metro City X I could probably find a reason with some minor part of it to make it interesting. I mean if we are going to use the phrase can we say it's a 'tarted up M3', that would at least give some clue...to the clueless Incidentally, are you implying that the M3 is just cosmetically different (i.e. 'tarted up' as you say) to the standard 3 series? Is "I don't like the BMW 3 series" a better comment? This thread after all is "is there a car that no-one on PH hates" and it could be for various reasons, aesthetics, build quality, how it drives and so on and let's be honest the 3 series isn't a pretty car and is common as muck and the BMW enthusiast is generally a boring person who will not take no for an answer. Give me a Z3M coupe any day of the week though!!

And I think this is the point. The list of cars that I truly find hateful extends to two - the aforementioned Pug 307 and the Mitsubishi Carisma. There are many others that I personally find bland, but that doesn't lead me to hate them, merely not wish to own themThe list of cars that I adore, by which I mean a "selling my granny's soul at a rock-bottom price to the devil"-type of adoration, is long and varied. It's true there are a number of BMWs on that list, but also many an Alfa, Lancia, Merc, Porsche, Ferrari, etc.

What about a Plymouth Superbird, who doesn't love the biggest spoiler known to man.
The looks could be described as an acquired tasteYou know that car is "wrong", you know it's going to be a bit crap to drive, it won't be particularly fast, or great handling. And it won't be reliable, it looks strange, and you can't help feeling bad for it's creator(s). And yet you can't hate it. In fact you love the unpretentious look at me personality, which isn't so much narcissism but childish naivety. A car designed by homer simpson perhaps.
In it's day the superbird was a fast car, the Long nose and large rear wing reflected the best innovations in aerodynamic design in NASCAR. The following year in 1971 NASCAR changed the rules to reduce the size of engines because over 200mph exceeded tyre and crash safety design technology as they were then.
