If everyone could afford every car, I bet there are some cars people would universally like. Humans have an odd trait of putting a downer on things they can't have as a way to justify it to themselves that there lesser substitute is good enough!!

However, I agree with the NSX and Delta!!

What are people's opinions on e30 m3s? I

Mclaren P1?!

Nope.

I seem to find they are driven by MLMs.

Absolutely hate them - worked on one for several years - metal same thickness as bacofoil and the ability to rust in front of your eyes
Me and my family have owned 6 of the things between us - yes, I've seen thicker metal on a coke can and they did like to turn to dust on your driveway, we loved them. It was just Mini, expected nothing less really.

I think this thread is going to be stuck on the Classics agreement for a while!

A true petrol head shouldn't 'hate' any car.
Any car is better than no car at all.

Not by me! And I have driven one - it was horrid. They exist in all the wrong aesthetic planes: tall, short and narrow whereas pleasing cars are low, long and wide.

The front end looks awkward, in fact the entire car resembles a phone box that fell over. Plus they're underpowered, cramped, slow, rubbery, dull, gimmicky, dour. Just a generally horrid little car for the nebbish poseurs of yesteryear. It's indicative of the misguided fawning over anything German amongst the car bore fraternity. Just accept that this particular Audi sucks. Some of them are quite good, but they screwed up on that occasion.

Can't imagine that there's much hate for some of the Eagle equivalents either.

Come on the guy was being sarcastic.

Does anyone genuinely dislike e-type jags? I agree they are overrated, especially to drive, but surely we at least like them.

Ironically I think a petrol head is MORE likely to hate a car than a 'civilian' as we expect more and recognise true ste when we see it.

I don't hate e-types, but the proportions of the coupe are all wrong to me, and the wheels/track is wrong too.
Soft top fixes the first issue, but not the second.

V8 muscle cars too noisy though?
Yep, brash and lacking in class.

If you want the Devil's-advocate answer.
Should a car be liked or disliked purely on how wealthy-yet-humble an image it portrays of its owner?

The Shelby Cobra and Ford GT40 were race cars without a hint of class about them, yet most like them.

Nobody has ever come up with a concise definition of class, but I'd be interested to hear a definition that didn't clash with the concepts of amusement, light heartedness or the PH favourite "a sense of occassion".

You're right that nobody would accuse a TVR of being classy - and on the basis that that is indeed the case, then classiness doesn't feature very highly on my attributes list when car shopping.

Isn't it a car that you could happily pick Kristin Scott Thomas up for dinner in?

Surely a car every petrolhead will have thought about owning, just so pretty.

That rather depends on whether you're happy to turn up as yourself or trying to convince her (or anyone else) that you're someone you're not doesn't it? smile

Same goes for all these "what to turn up with for a date" type threads. Just IMHO.

Ok it's maybe not great to ask a new date to fold herself in to a stripped out track car, but if she's going to judge you on your choice of daily driver or GT car then you should save time and skip straight to the break-up.

I hate the way it droops away to nothing at the back.

Plus rust.

Plus I hate convertibles.

PHers don't have as much in common as you think we do, hence the constant bickering.

I know a PHer who hates the NSX, apparently it isn't big enough inside and they shouldn't have put the huge boot on the back just for golfists.

Does anyone hate the Stratos? RS200?

I suppose you need to find a car that doesn't have an obvious rival, or else some of the owners of the alternative will hate it (just ask on the MX5OC about MGFs/MR2s/Elises/any coupe).

How do you feel about people who love a car then? No less mental than feeling hate, just nicer.
