E39 BMW - one of the very finest cars ever built - £500

TVR Chimaera - stylish, but a bit pants - £10,000

1960's Ferrari - see TVR, but more fragile and a bit more stylish - £10,000,000

All the above prices are a bit mad when considered from one angle, but all make perfect sense considered from another.

Have you seen the price of 80's & 90's Fords lately?

The mid 1990's Escort Cosworth has been a particularly big climber in the last few years.

This car was built in the same period as our TVRs & in much greater numbers, it is not a hand made open sports car with a V8 and a race car derived chassis, its a flippin Ford hatchback!!!! (all be a moderately quick one)

http://www.pistonheads.com/classifieds/used-cars/f...

And that's not one off...

http://www.pistonheads.com/classifieds/used-cars/f...

I think the whole old Ford value thing has gone mad, it seems to be driven more by the brand than the machine's engineering excellence. The thing that confuses me is in my day Ford wasn't a massively respected brand???

The phrase "Dagengham Dustbin" comes to mind wink

How is it a TVR Chimaera which is a 1060kg 300hp hand made traditional British V8 sports car built on a proper tubular space frame chassis with race car derived coil over unequal wishbone suspension be worth £10-£13k when an Escort Cosworth from the same period is worth £40k???

Honestly it's all gone nuts and has nothing to do with engineering excellence, the ignorance of the classic car buying public to what really makes a classic..... is baffling to me!!!

The world has gone mad!!!
To be fair the one at Hodgsons has been there for years and years...possibly since 96 !

The monte is a special edition and its limited run will always appeal. The cozzeh has a quedos across europe and for those of us who were of an age around the group B era where rallying was king it will always have a special place.

For what its worth I bought one for £15k last year and sold it for £18 which I thought was pretty good but nowhere near this 40K nonsense. Its a matter of time though....

I would say the Monte is worth the money, very limited edition car with a huge worldwide following.

I dont see why they are being compared to TVR's, completely different types of car! And the Escort is clearly better smile

I like most old fords to be honest but the rare ones are getting very expensive now and I don't really see them dropping.
Something like a moonstone RS500 would be on my lottery winning garage list

I like TVR's but 'engineering excellence' is seriously, seriously generous. They were pretty crude even when new and all age has done is increase tolerance for the quirks and experience in fixing them.

I don't see there being any fiberglass snobbery either, decent original Lotus Elan's are around 40k now and I'm sure you could find plenty of other examples of desirable GRP cars. It's just supply and demand, like any other car.

It's become an investment market. Once the big players/instigators have made a killing, they will cash in/withdraw, values will crash, and a lot of silly people will have very burnt fingers.

According to howmanyleft there are only 567 escort RS cosworths that were taxed this year, out of 7k built.
The 567 figure is hardly relevant as many of the 7145 were exported to just about anywhere you can think of.

BTW mine's not worth £40K.

It's probably worth noting that every Escort Cosworth isn't a Monte at 40k, the same way every mk1 Escort advertised isn't a twin cam at 60k

I disagree, this garage price cars quite high, but I bet the cars are very good condition. If I was after a nice Cossie and I always wanted one then this would probably be a good buy, no huge bills to get it in nice condition. The equivalent car new would probably be the same money. If it was 60k then it would be taking the mick. The bills to get a car like this in good condition are horrific. I know I have a tired integrale Evo 2. The running costs are huge and to make it immaculate costs an arm and a leg.

Well I bought mine it seems just as they were starting to increase in value, I use it as a summer toy and as much as possible as I can, it gets too much attention though and sometimes it can get annoying, you have to admit though, they are good looking cars?

Nor does anybody else.

I have weird tastes.

BTW the picture above doesn't include a working transmission.

I left some of it behind on the A30.

you could probably say the same of a load of cars, all of which I've never owned or even driven:

E30 m3- souped up saloon car
Integrale- souped up family hatch
964 rs- 911 with hard suspension
Other rs fords/Cosworths - souped up saloons or hatches

all cult cars and have a following mostly due to racing success. The demand for them is greater than the supply for them.

Saying that I'm sceptical that these 40k cars actually sell and if they do for the amount advertised. See also £100k honda nsr750s, £40k rc30s etc. For a while I've wondered who buys the £25k Integrales Evos as there seems to be quite a few for sale and I hardly ever see any in the road compared to other cars mentioned.

I suspect all Fords have gone up another grand since this thread was started. Money Week will shortly recommend exiting the FTSE to get behind the wheel of an old Ford instead. Pretty soon you won't even be able to give Gold away. Quick, sell your house and buy a Ford. Any Ford. Just do it NOW!!

Well, on the continent the Escort Cosworth has always been bridesmaid to the Integrale which was regarded as the more complete driver's car by quite some margin and after that, usurped by the Impreza Turbo which did pretty much the same at half the price - so again this seems to be a UK-only/scene-based thing. smile
