I was in a large(ish) group of trail riders (TRF - goof blokes!) and one of our numbers bikes broke down. We were at the side of the road right by a sign that said: 'Best kept village 2008' and we were filthy and the bikes clarted with mud.

After about thirty minutes of curtain twitching and dirty looks, a lady toddled out of her house with a tray laden with tea, coffee and biscuits! We were astonished, but very grateful.

On the other hand, I once stopped and helped a couple who had broken down in an old XJ6. Me and the chap I was with sorted out their dodgy fuel pumps at the side of a busy road and then went and bought jump leads as they'd flattened the battery, all the while they sat in their car. As soon as we got it running, they drove off - not so much as a 'thank you'!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The most I've ever done is give someone a bump start when their car has broken down or helped them move it out of the the way if its been in traffic.

A bloke in a red Ferrari 360 broke down outside my house in London in a residents parking only area. I lent him a guest permit for the day and he said he would come back and give me and my 8 year old son a ride in the car once it was mended.

A few weeks later he actually did! Father and son were dead chuffed, the neighbours less so. I don't think the exhaust was standard.

When my brother crashed and was waiting on the AA coming a gentleman in a CLS63 stopped and offered him a lift.

I think he was more upset about not being able to take the lift than the fact he'd written off our car smile

It is a bit sad when the acts of kindness are so few that they become abnormal. I always try to be good as I do believe that there is no harm.

I saw a woman and child out of their car in the pouring rain at the side of the road. I stopped and offered for them to wait in my car, understandably she felt uneasy with that but instead took an umbrella I had in the car so she had some shelter.

My daughter broke down in a very dangerous place. A couple stopped and helped to push her to a safe place and waited until help arrived.

Does karma exist? Who knows but there are still more good acts than bad I suspect

I pulled up next to a chap in a Corsa a good few months ago. Wife in passenger seat. Two kids in kiddie seats in back.

I beeped and wound my window down to warn him that his back wheel was only secured by two bolts.

His response? "What's it got to do with you? fk off!". rolleyes

I read the road ahead on the motorway and flash lorries out when then they are catching up with the lorry in front.

Also, as I'm approaching red tragic lights/busy junctions etc. and there is a road to my left (UK roads), I will always leave a gap, so that other drivers can turn in/out of there. It's amazing how many people will blindly and pointlessly block these entrances!

Other times, I can be a bit of a knob though.

I stopped to help and old boy in a metro who had stalled on a junction, got out of my car, pushed him and got him going again, in the meantime (2 mins tops) the HGV who had been behind me went to the right hand lane and turned left taking my front bumper off !

When I had my Suzuki Samurai jeep I managed to burn the clutch out (foolishly) trying to aid a stuck van in the snow. A decent chap in a classic Rangey stopped and gave me a tow home.

Yeah it's a little odd. Surely the coppers in their cars would have refreshments already there, ie a bottle of water and a sandwich etc.

Ah I feel pretty good about myself now. I'm pretty good at stopping and helping people out, especially in the snow.

A few weeks ago a local facebook page asked for help as an Icecream van had got itself stuck in the mud. It took us 2 hours of digging and shoving all manor of stuff under its wheels to get it out whilst Range Rovers and other 4x4's just drove past.
On Saturday I noticed an RAC van outside my work looking at the now Tesla showroom that used to be Mercedes. Funnily enough he was towing a merc. After trying to direct him to the new Merc showroom I thought it best I just drive out of my way with him following.

My neighbour hit a bloody great bit of stone left on a nasty dark, narrow country road with no verge. It forced her shock into the wheel so her car was utterly buggered and couldn't move. She called us as she had her 6 yr old daughter with her and couldn't get in touch with her OH. By the time we got there a chap driving a road cleaner truck had parked up behind her with his orange lights flashing to protect her car. He was an absolute star as he stayed until the flatbed turned up.

We made sure we got his number to pass thanks to him and make sure his boss knew why he was late. There are good people around.

Indeed, the 'normal' behaviour nowadays would be to either...

  • 1000-yard stare past the collision/traffic police.
  • slow down and gawk at the collision/traffic police. While holding everyone up. And drooling.
  • just when about to pass lob random abuse at those involved in collision/traffic police. Bonus points for driving past as close and as fast as possible and drooling all over the inside of the car while shouting.

Those familiar with Lincoln will know the A15 runs right through the city and heading north turns itself into a hill that runs past the Cathedral. Was rush hour and I was coming up the hill in slow traffic, to find cars in front of me manoeuvring around something, when it was my turn, it turned out it was a young lad on some nakkard old 125 chicken chaser. It was a hot day, he was in full leather gear with what looked to be quite a heavy back pack strapped to his back. He could barley touch the floor and had the build of a pipe cleaner and was trying to shuffle to the side of the road out the way. I got 100 yards to the top of the hill and parked up and went back down to assist, having got it turned around, facing down the hill and several attempts at trying to bump it, the safest place to leave it was where I had parked so I pushed it back to the top of the hill. Being unfit in about 27 deg c heat I was done for, nearly had to poke my lungs back up my bottom.
