Great article.

Makes me wish I hadn't just put mine away for the winter.

I had an M42 engine in an e21 and it was great fun.

I built it to replicate a County Race car. TWR used copies of the CSL wing, as Tom felt the genuine BMW motorsport spoilers were too expensive. smile

ah, I thought it looked awfully a lot like a period race car thumbup
The way the wing fits the boot.. lovely.
I've often found the BMW fan boy thing a bit weird, but if they were all like the examples in this thread it'd make sense.

Having now watched the 'ring lap video I can say that Dale's car is brutiful and much fast.
Would it be vulgar to ask for a torque curve, what the displacement actually is and pics of the engine bay please?

Lots more shots of the engine next report... including some internal shots. Oops.

Nice write up Dale, looks like a great car. smile

For as much as I like my E36 328i, I always felt the E30 absolutely spanked it for steering feel. How do you feel they compare on the track from that point of view?

The E36 was pretty awesome by the end (full Spires/Nitron kit and M-bushes and uniballs)... but somehow I find the E30 much more satisfying and fulsome.

What do they weight in original trim? 1200, 1250kg?
I can't imagine that it can be under 1000kg now?
About 1120kg as standard. 50kg of that is not difficult to remove...seats swap, lightweight battery, lose the spare and tools.
Just a normal 318i 4-door came in at 1077kg kerb weight, a 2-door came in at 1085 kg kerb weight in 2 period road tests of the time. The 318is Autocar weighed came in at 1157kg, so yes they are pretty light

Poly windows, aliminium boot floor and fibreglass panels are an easy route to lightness. My old 325 track car only made 171bhp from the old m20, but it was just so much fun once we'd stripped the weight out of it. I must admit, I prefer the feel of the four cylinder cars though.
