I love foresters & Legacys. There seems to be millions out here in NZ, most of them sporting fruity exhausts. They just seem such good value for money along with being practical and a little different

These things are unreal:

I was given a highly tuned one for an evening, it was comfortably the quickest and most violent car I've ever driven - on a short straight I pulled out to overtake one car and ended up flying past five in a huge flurry of turbo whistle, wastegate chatter and with plenty of straight left - the speedo was showing a number I can't print here.

I lifted the bonnet later on and it was a mass of pink tubes, an intercooler bigger than my coffee table and a turbo the size of Belgium.

No power figures were suggested but it felt like north of 450hp, bonkers thing.

Was the intercooler still on top? That'll give you a good indication if it was over 400 horse power or not. I bet it was superb fun smile

Would love one of these.
Have had a non turbo 2.0 one for the last few years and it's still a superb ride even at 130k miles.
Not economical on the fuel front, but it does a job.

I need a practical estate type car for my 3 dogs have been looking at a legacy estate j d m there are plenty advertised at sensible money, but one of these would do head scratching time, has anybody had both ? .
I had a 2000 Legacy GTB picked up for £1700. Great machine: subtle, very quick, secure, liked to be hustled along country roads but 25mpg at best. Spent a bit of money keeping it on the road, and always a slight worry the bottom end would go making it virtually a write off, but never happened to me. Can't speak for the Forester, but the GTB was a great car. There's some story that it was the fastest estate car in the world at some point in the 90s - over 170mph.
Sold it 2 years later for £1750. Still regret it - that's almost shed money.

Legacy GTB, wibble! Lovely things. Particularly fond of the Blitzen of which there are a few in the UK. Do reckon the Legacy GTB should be a Pistonheads Hero at some point. It has all the qualifying characteristics. The prices of non-Blitzen GTB's are also laughably cheap though that bottom end rebuild is a killer. Eventually the values have to start going up as the number remaining reduces. However, full respect to you sir for running one for a while.

Ain't that the truth!

Managed 36mpg on the dullest drive of my life, but commuting across town I used to see 17mpg.

New Forester STI coming?! Great news!
You just know they'll use that awful CVT with it.

Yes, if you're lucky and the ring lands don't fail after 20-40k!

I still miss mine. Both of them.

Jolly Green Monster had tweaked the second one a bit, so 340 bhp and 370 ft.lbs with a scary amount of grip. They weigh 1570 Kg so much less than some of the 2-tonne SUVs and far more agile.

Best mileage was 34 mpg on a very long run but usually in the mid-20's.

Mine had the Milltek exhaust which could be quite droney inside the car, although a fair bit of foam and dynamat in the rear cabin floor and tailgate area helped a lot. The external noise probably helps with safety - on one occasion I was tempted to put the original much quieter back box on to see what it was like. Passing a side turning somebody looked both ways, then straight at me, then drove straight into the side of the Scoob. In the same situation with the Milltek they would have seen them jump as they noticed what was bearing down on them...

The CVT is better than it's name suggests. Put it in S# or S# and you wouldn't know that it was a CVT.

Love these thingssmile For a road trip with long stretches of gravel road and the need for a bit of ground clearance loaded up with camping gear/surfboards can't think of a better vehicle for cross country pacebiggrin

Soft spot for Legacy's too- such good Q cars, won't forget being surprised by how rapid a 3.0R was (until I had a look at it's specs).

Great cars but the Spec-B I drove a month or so a go felt rather pedestrian. Probably the flat torque on it. Didn't find the lack of bump stops on the shock absorbers particularly nice either.
