very surprised by the ford comment. given they are as cheap as most other average price cars, but far ahead with engines, driving, quality etc.

audi, aston, agreed.

Audi.

BMW engines are class leading for performance, economy/ emissions, service intervals and not like Bang & Olufsen, I mean Audi, which are style over substance.

I can't believe no has mentioned the F word. That's right Fiat, no other car comes close to poor design and build quality in my quite extensive experience. How the hell do they win car of the year awards EVERY year?
Probably because they've never been rated that highly like most German or Japanese manufacturers. They're average at best. Saying that, I've owned 7 Fiats and hardly had any issues although you're right about build quality. My Grande Punto is squeaking inside something chronic after 7 years of ownership. It was nice and quiet inside. Great engines though.

BMW - each generation for the last three generations seen a downgrading in quality of materials used and overall build quality

They do probably have the best marketing department of any manufacturer, Efficient Dynamics, TwinPower - take mainstream product, give it a fancy name and people think its cutting edge stuff

Sorry, but that's total horlicks!

To try and claim audi's engines are second class is just laughable.

Bought one from a main dealer, never been treated so badly, car felt cheap inside, seats were uncomfortable, clutch went 12k miles in. Never again.

As a brand they are doing great, I tried a few, even as everyday cars but left feeling uninterested. Not offended just blank.

What I meant is many Audi engines/ platforms are available in the Skoda, VW, Seat range for much less cash - the same can not be said for most BMWs.

I've driven plenty of VAG cars and they simply do not drive as well as their BMW counterparts (I have no axe to grind and currently have a Golf R on order plus have owned 3 VAG cars and 3 BMWs so would like to think I'm being impartial).

Look the part, but that's easy for the price. Average tech, average dynamics, very good paint, average engines.

Agree here, Ford are on the right track with cars at the moment, they have a good engine base and can produce cheap, well designed cars that people are buying, that's good business no?
There's also a reason why the Fiesta ST keeps getting awarded the best hot hatch award over the RSClio & 208GTI.
Not only is it cheaper fully speck'd than its French rivals but it's got a proper manual box, the only constant criticism it gets is that its not available in 5 doors, and tbh is that really a bad thing for a sport little hatchback?

the topic however is never going to get a clear and decisive answer, each person has their own opinion of what car is the worst/most overrated.
For instance my beef with the French cars comes from having stty experience of them. However I've had nothing but good motoring from my Ford's, well that was until they put the Peugeot diesel engine in the Focus and they kept blowing the turbos!

I've driven VAG cars and they all felt the same. My current car, a BMW, isn't something special to drive but I fancied a change and it was in budget. that's it really, I didn't chose it over another car for any other reason than I fancied having one for a bit to see what they were all about.

* I use my indicators and happily let people out of junctions! trying to change the BMW man stereotype everyday wink

VAG followed by bmw then merc then most mast produced cars made today.

The more I work on newer cars the less I want to own them way to much to go wrong and when they do its not cheap. Most audis and vws are dull as dish water look bland and the interior is just naff, ride is horrid and engines are crap to apart from the old 1.9 diesel.

They have a massive following due to mindless sheep who think they are impressive mr jones who has one note to you lot nobody gives a flying fk, if they had a proton badge on them they wont sell half as good as they do.

Im sticking with my 90s jap cars for the time being.
